SUMMARY
The Peer Support Specialist uses their own lived experience with challenges such as mental health, substance use, housing instability, homelessness, or system involvement to support youth and young adults accessing the Access Center. This role focuses on building trust, offering hope, and empowering peers through shared experience. Peer Specialists provide emotional support, resource navigation, and advocacy to help young adults achieve stability and independence.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Welcome young adults into the Access Center and create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment.
Assist those visiting the access center in identifying goals related to housing, education, employment, and wellness.
Facilitate peer-led groups, life skills workshops, and social activities.
Advocate for young adults’ needs within the program and with external providers.
Assess individual needs and provide access to essential items such as hygiene supplies, clothing, and food to support immediate needs.
Monitor Drop-In Center activity, ensure clients are checked in, and maintain cleanliness of the space.
Work closely with staff to coordinate care and share insights from a peer perspective.
Respond to crises using trauma-informed and de‑escalation techniques.
Build collaborative relationships with community partners and stakeholders.
Develop relationships based on trust with young adults, serving as a positive and motivating force.
Operate motor vehicles safely and in accordance with State Law (agency and personal automobiles) while on work. related duties.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
This position is intended for individuals with lived experience as participants in the mental health service system who have demonstrated the ability to access and utilize community resources effectively. Experience in navigating behavioral health services is required, as this skill is essential to supporting peers in similar situations.. A High School Diploma or GED is required for this role.
