About the Agency The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) was chartered in 1834 and is the largest, busiest, and oldest continuously operating commuter railroad in the United States. In 2024 it served 75.5 million riders across a system that stretches nearly 120 miles, from Manhattan to Montauk on Long Island.

Summary The Project Management Trainee (PMT) is an entry‑level training position within RPS, designed to support the management of Force Account Capital Program projects. This role provides a structured, hands‑on learning environment for individuals seeking a career in project management in the railroad industry.

Responsibilities

Gain an understanding of general project procedures, protocols, and processes related to project coordination, administration, and all aspects of project management through on‑the‑job training.

Observe and learn about project management and the railroad industry. Develop positive working relationships and demonstrate initiative.

Participate in developing, planning, reviewing, and coordinating elements of LIRR Force Account and Third‑Party Contract work under the Capital Improvement Program.

Review specifications and drawings; maintain documentation files; assist in preparing reports, presentations, research, and studies.

Learn and participate in the development of projects and reporting requirements of all types.

Assist in the development of office and field control‑related systems.

Assist in maintaining liaison between project management team members and internal railroad departments & disciplines.

Perform all other assignments at the request of management.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a Business‑related field.

Self‑motivated with strong responsibility and ability to work effectively under pressure.

Strong administrative and coordination skills for organizing reports.

Outstanding oral and written communication and computer proficiency (Microsoft Word & Excel).

Analytical and problem‑solving skills to recommend workflow improvements.

Some experience reading specifications and interpreting construction plans.

Strong business skills: report writing, letter writing, filing, meeting minutes, and spreadsheets.

Preferred/Desirable

Minimum 6 months of prior related work experience.

Advanced degree.

Professional license or certification.

Wage Progression

Step 1 – Entrance (0‑6 Months): $33.23

Step 2 – 6‑12 Months: $34.89

Step 3 – 12‑18 Months: $36.63

Step 4 – 18 Months+: $38.46

Other Information Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years. Current employees must remain in their current position for 12 months before transitioning to a new role.
