Overview The purpose of the position is to perform simple and routine work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as masonry, carpentry, plumbing, roofing, painting, and other work such as documentation, reporting, and monitoring, as part of a multi‑disciplinary preservation program in the conservation of historic and prehistoric ruins and structures.

Responsibilities

Assist journeyman carpenters, plumbers, and electricians with projects related to carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, heating, air conditioning, masonry, and routine maintenance of generators.

Operate light pickups, electric carts, small tractors, and other power equipment, as required.

Clean public restrooms, pick up and haul garbage; perform minor repairs, including plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work; pick up litter at visitor use areas; maintain campgrounds and associated facilities such as public water and wastewater systems, fire pits, fish cleaning stations, picnic areas, etc.

Identify and correct job safety and health hazards; follow prescribed safety practices and use required safety equipment such as hearing devices, hard hats, seat belts, steel‑toed shoes, respirators, and protective clothing.

Salary Salary does not include locality pay. For specific wage information refer to the OPM Salaries and Wages link. A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected.

Cut‑off Dates This is an open continuous announcement. Applications are collected over several months and have multiple cut‑off dates. Applications received by the initial cut‑off date will be considered first. Initial cut‑off is Monday 12 January, 2026. Additional referral certificates are issued when a hiring official exhausts current certificates or additional vacancies need to be filled.

Requirements

U.S. Citizenship required.

Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.

Direct Deposit: Selectee must participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.

Valid driver’s license required; submission of driving records and motor‑vehicle operator license required.

Uniform: Requirement to wear uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards; uniform allowance provided.

Minimum age 18 (or 16 with high‑school graduation, vocational training, or qualified school enrollment conditions).

Government housing may be available at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore; not available at Fort Scott National Historic Site or Keweenaw National Historical Park.

Qualifications

Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision (screen‑out).

Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints.

Ability to use and maintain hand and power tools.

Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair.

Knowledge of materials and technical practices.

Use of measuring instruments.

Screen‑out Perform common maintenance worker (historic preservation) tasks in at least 3 of the following trades: minor carpentry work on interior and exterior of buildings, general plumbing, painting, masonry, electrical, and vehicle operation. Use most hand and power tools associated with these trades. Performed these tasks as a skilled helper under close supervision, with work verified for compliance with safety standards and policies.

Volunteer Experience Volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations is credited as relevant experience.

Physical Demands Heavy to moderate physical effort, lifting up to 50 pounds unassisted, and occasionally heavier items with assistance. Work requires standing, stooping, bending, crouching, and climbing in uncomfortable positions under varying environmental conditions. Work may involve ladders, scaffolds, and high‑elevation platforms.

Working Conditions Work at prehistoric and historic structures often in backcountry locations requiring rappelling and scaffold use. Work may be dusty, expose occupants to noise, fumes, hazardous materials such as rodent nests, asbestos, and lead. Protective equipment is required. Work may be outside under adverse weather and involve insects, snakes, and poisonous plants.
