General Statement:

The Phoenix Zoo’s Animal Curator - Mammals is responsible for managing assigned areas of the Living Collections Department to include consideration of animal health and welfare, assisting in the acquisition and disposition of animals, collection planning, collaborating in development and implementation of policies and procedures, operations and budget recommendations, selection and supervision of assigned staff. The Animal Curator also collaborates with the Director of Living Collections in the development and presentation of guest experiences that support the Phoenix Zoo’s mission and core values.

Essential Duties:

Provide quality guest service to both internal and external guests by maintaining a WILD (friendly, helpful, positive and professional working attitude and appearance.

Responsible for overseeing the health, welfare and husbandry of collection animals of assigned areas.

Assist in acquisition and disposition of Living Collections’ components by collaborating with the Director of Living Collections, Collection Managers, Registrar and Veterinarians.

Assist Director of Living Collections in collection planning and captive management.

Collaborate with Director of Living Collections on the development and implementation of institutional policies and procedures related to Living Collections Department.

Participate in the recruitment and selection of new personnel as required.

Management of staff to include recruitment, training, scheduling, payroll and performance management through effective leadership, communication, training, coaching and mentoring to encourage staff development. Create, foster and maintain positive team-oriented work environment.

Manage staff performance to include performance appraisals documentation and disciplinary/corrective action.

Provide assistance, oversight and supervision to Collection Managers in overseeing operation and management of assigned areas, staff, and animals.

Provide input into the assessment of existing physical facilities and the development of capital improvement and modification requests. Assist the Director of Living Collections in the planning and oversight of short-term improvements, minor repairs, and modifications as assigned.

Effectively interact with staff from all other zoo departments, guests, media, government agencies and outside professionals.

Actively collaborate with other staff and departments to ensure that husbandry and behavioral management practices support designated public experiences and other communication activities related to Group Services, Marketing, PR, and other special events.

Participate on internal teams and ad-hoc committees as needed and assigned.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Life Science or equivalent job experience.

Minimum 5 years prior management experience within an AZA accredited institution or similar zoological institution.

Proven organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and meeting deadlines.

Strong interpersonal, oral/written communication and managerial skills.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Ability to bend, stoop, crawl and walk over uneven surfaces and work in extreme weather conditions.

Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Ability to pass pre-employment background check, drug test, DMV check and clear annual TB test.
