Certified Group Exercise Instructor - Central City Family YMCA The Group Exercise Instructor reports to and takes day‑to‑day direction from the Group Exercise/Wellness Coordinator and/or the Wellness Director. The instructor will deliver multiple class options such as Les Mills, Cycling, Step, Body Sculpting, Zumba, Yoga and Water Exercise classes while maintaining a member‑centered environment.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Instruct members in maintaining exertion levels to maximize benefits from exercise routines.

Monitor member progress and adapt programs as needed.

Observe members and inform them of corrective measures necessary for skill improvement.

Evaluate individuals’ abilities, needs, and physical conditions, and develop suitable training programs to meet special requirements.

Offer variations of the routine to accommodate all fitness levels.

Proactively provide appropriate direction to members performing dangerous or harmful exercises.

Solicit feedback from participants about the class and answer questions.

Maintain accurate class attendance records.

Adhere to Association operating policies and procedures.

Maintain and clean equipment according to the schedule.

Design and lead special programs such as planning, coordinating, presenting, and/or promoting classes and events.

Explain and enforce safety rules and regulations governing sports, recreational activities, and use of equipment.

Be responsible for own class coverage when unavailable.

Perform any other duties as assigned by the Group Exercise Coordinator and/or the Wellness Director.

Follow YMCA policies and procedures regarding safety, health, and welfare of members, program participants, guests and staff.

Complete all job‑related meetings and trainings as required.

Support the mission during annual giving events.

Water exercise classes must be taught from the pool deck.

Safety and Risk Management

Adhere to all Federal, State, and local safety regulations and YMCA policies related to safety, health, and welfare.

Implement and follow all Tampa YMCA standards, leading practices, and policies.

Manage high-risk activities and supervise participants appropriately.

Complete risk management and child abuse prevention training and report incidents.

Maintain a safe and healthy environment at all times, performing daily safety checks.

Maintain proper records, including certifications, meetings, and trainings.

Contribute to creating a safe, positive, and respectful environment for members, guests, and staff.

Report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior, as well as policy violations.

Position Requirements

Must be at least 18 years of age or older.

National certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM, Les Mills, Zumba) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.

Yoga instructors must have a current Yoga specific certification of 200+ hrs.

Water Exercise Instructors must have a current water instructor certification.

At least one year of experience instructing group exercise classes preferred.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to develop positive relationships with diverse groups and individuals.

Must be well‑organized and prepared to teach classes.

Represent the YMCA in a positive manner.

Certifications/Trainings Required

Obtain within 30 days of employment and maintain current certifications in community CPR/AED and First Aid.

Maintain position‑specific required certifications as stated in the training matrix.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Plan, lead, and participate in classes and activities.

Verbal and physical communication of program content.

Perform physical aspects of the position, e.g., leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, teaching from pool deck, lifting.

Lift equipment up to 50 pounds.

Stand for extended periods.

Adapt to changing circumstances.

Work in various environments, including extreme humidity/dampness, heat, and cold.

Travel for training may be required.

Availability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Wear appropriate fitness attire and footwear at all times; ensure form visibility and professionalism.
