Peaceable Primate Sanctuary (PPS) in Winamac, Indiana is actively looking for a motivated individual with a passion for animal care to join our veterinary team. PPS is a 79-acre facility dedicated to providing enriching retirement for primates from the pet, entertainment, and research industries. With the first baboons arriving here in 2016, the sanctuary now houses over 150 primates representing 8 species, a small number of other animals and is rapidly expanding. Veterinary technicians work alongside our experienced veterinarians and caretakers to provide high-quality care to retired primates.

Job Responsibilities

Conduct routine rounds of all animal housing areas ensuring general welfare and ongoing monitoring of clinical cases.

Reporting concerns to veterinarians and sanctuary management in a timely and appropriate manner.

Coordinate with veterinarians and animal care staff to safely anesthetize dangerous animals for veterinary care as needed.

Assist veterinarians with routine, diagnostic, and emergency procedures.

Perform sample collection and evaluation, including fecal parasite examinations, urinalysis, and other laboratory tests.

Preparation and dispensing of medications to housing areas as appropriate.

Assist in administration of medications and treatments for animals.

Maintain complete and current medical records and coordinate with veterinarian/s to provide veterinary care as indicated by health records and protocols.

Maintain clinic standards of cleanliness including sweeping, mopping, removing trash, disinfecting, and performing animal husbandry duties if needed.

Utilize operant conditioning in junction with caretakers to train primates to voluntarily participate in veterinary care as needed.

Oversee and educate caretakers and animal care interns on basic veterinary procedures as indicated by PPS management.

Maintain inventory of veterinary supplies and medications and order supplies as necessary.

Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Able to commit to minimum 8 hours per week at sanctuary (opportunities for increased hours available).

Must be a licensed veterinary technician in the state of Indiana, able to obtain license within 6 months of hiring, or have veterinary experience in the species housed.

Prior veterinary experience is required.

Experience in exotic veterinary medicine is preferred, specifically with primates.

Able to communicate effectively and professionally with PPS veterinarians, management, and caretakers.

Starting Pay: $18/hour
