Overview: Responsible for performing technical and clerical duties within the inpatient pharmacy distribution system. The IV Pharmacy Technician is responsible for sterile compounding using the principles of aseptic technique. Compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) are prepared in compliance with USP 797 utilizing laminar airflow workbenches and/or biological safety cabinets. Tasks include medication and supply inventory management, medication preparation, medication distribution to patient care units and automated dispensing cabinets, regulatory compliance and other tasks necessary to support safe medication distribution. Competencies required for Pharmacy Technician Level 1 must be successfully completed within 6 months of start date and at annual evaluations thereafter.

Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.

Experience and Training: Preferred at least one of the following:

One year of hospital or community pharmacy experience

Experience with aseptic technique, sterile compounding, and USP 797 requirements

Completion of Military Hospital Core school and/or Field Medical Service school

One year (24 credit hours) of college level study including Algebra, Chemistry, Biology

Knowledge/Characteristics:

Successful completion of all competencies required for the Pharmacy Technician Level 1 position, including all new hire competencies.

Score of at least 85% on departmental competencies.

Ability to lift 30+ pounds.

Ability to operate calculator, telecommunication equipment, and computer workstation.

Successful completion of aseptic technique assessment and other required IV competencies.

Comprehensive knowledge of compounding sterile products (including hazardous agents).

Knowledge of medications including brand and generic names.

Perform necessary calculations to accurately prepare medication doses.

Knowledge of and compliance with state and federal pharmacy laws, rules, and regulatory standards.

Foster a customer‑oriented and hospitable work environment.

Facilitate communication within and across departments.

Demonstrate safety, accuracy, and timeliness when completing work.

Ability to triage work appropriately.

Motor Vehicle Operator Designation: Employees in this position will not operate vehicles for an assigned business purpose.

All Pharmacy Technicians must be registered with the Florida Board of Pharmacy as a Registered Pharmacy Technician or licensed Pharmacist Intern prior to their first day of employment.

As a condition of employment within the Pharmacy Services Department of Shands Hospital all employees must be accessible by telephone. This requires each employee to provide and maintain a valid telephone number to the department Staff Assistant, in order for the department to reach them in the event of hospital need and/or emergency.
