Field Service Representative – American Water Posted: 12/17/25 • Location: Pittsburgh, PA • Salary: $40,000.00-$68,000.00

This role serves as the primary customer interface for investigating, addressing, and correcting service matters. The Field Service Representative will perform a range of tasks including meter installation, repairs, customer interaction, and field documentation.

Key Responsibilities

Installs or replaces water meters with or without reading devices.

Locates, operates, and repairs shutoff valves, boxes, and external plumbing for defects or leakage.

Examines meters, connections, internal and external plumbing for defects or leakage.

May perform emergency plumbing repairs.

Performs collection activities, turn offs, reconnects, and delivers notices.

Investigates customer complaints and determines corrective action per company procedure.

May investigate illegal water usage.

Completes necessary forms, sketches, field notes, and uses maps and records.

Performs manual digging to uncover valves and curb boxes using shovel, digging bar, or pick.

Drives vehicle/truck in general job duties and follows established routes, taking meter readings.

Returns route book to business office for billing.

Inspects meters and connections for defects, damage, and unauthorized connections.

Indicates irregularities in computer for servicing department action.

Verifies readings to locate abnormal consumption and records reasons for fluctuations.

Performs sounding (if applicable).

May turn service off for nonpayment in vacant premises or turn on for occupants.

Tests and repairs meters, documents results, scrapes old meters.

Maintains and stocks meter testing room and supply room.

Assists with building maintenance when needed.

Maintains vehicle equipped for DOT DVIR inspections if applicable.

Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Knowledge / Skills

Customer service skills and courteous interaction.

Knowledge of meter installations of various sizes.

Basic understanding of meter function, reading, and repair.

Working knowledge of necessary tools.

General plumbing knowledge.

Knowledge of computers.

Experience / Education

High School diploma or equivalent.

Meter reading, customer service, plumbing or water distribution experience preferred.

Cross‑training in water meter department suggested.

Mechanical ability.

Related activities and past experience with water systems.

Work Schedule

Two vacancies available:

Schedule #1 – Full‑time, on‑site: Tuesday‑Friday 12pm‑8pm, Saturday 8am‑4pm; On‑call responsibility.

Schedule #2 – Full‑time, on‑site: Monday‑Friday 12pm‑8pm; On‑call responsibility.

Work Environment Must adapt to variations in topography and weather conditions.

Certifications & Licenses After hire, must pass Class E Water Distribution License exam within 24 months of achievement of minimum experience for certification, and apply for certification within 6 months if not already met.

Other Job Requirements

Subject to mandatory off‑hours call‑out and overtime.

Must possess and maintain valid driver’s license in state of residence.

May be required to complete and maintain driver qualification forms.

May need DOT medical card.
