Key Responsibilities The Instrumentation and Electrical Technician is responsible for identifying, locating and correcting operational problems arising in control systems and instruments. These problems occur in high purity specialty hydrocarbons processes as well as in utility systems such as boilers, water treatment and other related auxiliary equipment.
Diagnose, repair, design and install instrumentation, controls, and control systems, including DCS, PLC, and loop controllers.
Maintain facility equipment through corrective, predictive and planned activities.
Oversee and coordinate outside contractors during outages or as required.
Replace instrumentation and controls as needed.
Assist in preparing labor/material estimates.
Consult with supervisors on problem resolution.
Write, review and revise maintenance procedures.
Execute assignments to support plant processes, facilities and/or engineering efficiently.
Recommend and assist with requisitions for spare parts, tools, etc.
Control rationing of storeroom items, tools, etc.
Test, calibrate and repair electronic and pneumatic control devices.
Document instrument and control status and activities performed.
Maintain instruments, standards and tools.
Inspect equipment prior to vendor certification and review documentation.
Develop and revise calibration procedures and job plans to improve effectiveness.
Special Assignments Special assignments or tasks assigned as determined by supervisor at the employee’s sole discretion.
Required Experience
Demonstrated knowledge of repair & maintenance of control and instrumentation equipment.
Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical one-lines, logic drawings, technical manuals and P&ID’s.
5+ years of instrumentation and controls experience in a chemical plant or similar industry preferred.
Educational Level Associate’s Degree in electronics or a closely related field.
Required Skills

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and external vendors.
Skilled in using hand tools, shop and power equipment.

Make instrumentation and control decisions with minimal supervision.
Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail, accuracy and timeliness.
Intermediate computer knowledge of Microsoft products and SAP.
Work Conditions Work is performed both in an office and outdoors in a petroleum refinery environment, including chemical tanks, pressure vessels, rotating equipment, confined spaces, and electrical shock risk. Weather and road conditions apply. Occasionally requires long hours, nights, weekends, holidays for maintenance and emergency work, as well as on-call availability.
Physical Requirements Job conditions include standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing, visual inspections, precise hand and finger movements, lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing up to 200 ft., perceiving color differences, wearing PPE and respirator as needed. Must complete a medical physical examination depending on location. Conditions may also require twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching or grasping, and working in confined spaces where permitted.
