The City of Richmond Department of General Services

is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill the position of

Electrician, Senior

in the

Facilities Management Division . The incumbent will provide skilled electrical maintenance to a variety of systems and equipment, and provide installing, maintaining and repairing electrical equipment including lighting, motors, generators, controls, conduits, and wiring. This class also may lead or provide directions and training to other staff, including electricians with less experience. As assigned, work may include, providing on‑call emergency response; implementing new electrical technologies such as automated control systems, LED lighting, and solar power; performing preventative maintenance of high and low voltage electrical systems; troubleshooting electrical problems and making electrical repairs; overseeing new projects; reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, and schematics; operating equipment to assist in repairs such as bucket trucks, dump trucks, front‑end loaders, backhoes, trenchers, bobcats, and forklifts; operating diagnostic equipment such as ammeters, ohmmeters, circuit tracers, infrared imaging/thermography devices, etc.; monitoring and surveying energy usage; obtaining pricing for parts and materials; and following safety rules and regulations.

Provides maintenance and repairs to City electrical systems and equipment, including making decisions on scheduling/queuing.

Ensures proper operation of electrical systems by installing and maintaining electrical equipment such as circuits, lighting, motors, conduits, wiring, high voltage switch gears, telemetering equipment, etc.

Performs inspections of fire alarms and sprinkler equipment.

Performs routine maintenance checks, including preventative maintenance work.

Maintains, tests, and troubleshoots equipment; reads blueprints, schematics, sketches, and code books; and designs electrical systems for power and lighting.

Performs routine administrative duties such as putting in requests for and obtaining pricing for parts, equipment, and materials; updating and entering information into the database management system; and maintaining records of stated/finished work orders.

Assists other trades in performing tasks such as lock‑out and tag‑out of equipment for safety and participates in training and development activities to stay current on knowledge and issues.

Other duties as assigned.

City of Richmond Department of Public Works employees who work in this position are considered essential personnel and may be required to work beyond scheduled hours, during inclement weather, and during declared emergencies.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or GED

Formal training in electrical functions

Six years of electrician experience

An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Valid current Journeyman Electrician certification

Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire

Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES TYPICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.

Knowledge (some combination of the following)

The National Electrical Code (NFPA70)

Electrical theory including Kerch. visitor's law, Ohms law, etc.

Utility plant operations, including processes for operating water purification plant

Electrical and mechanical equipment/systems, including gear boxes, motors, air compressors, pumps, as well asequipment used at water purification plants and water pumping stations

Extensive knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures

In-depth knowledge of the CMMS system or similar system used to log work tasks, order parts and materials, etc.

Mathematics, including geometric and algebraic formulas

Skills (some combination of the following)

Computer Proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite

Manual dexterity in using hands and electrical tools

Critical thinking and analytical skills

Customer Service

Reading and listening comprehension

Strong organizational and time management

Reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and schematics

Troubleshooting electrical systems and their components to ensure safe and proper operations

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS Working conditions may include exposure to travel to other locations within the City of Richmond as well as outside of the City of Richmond; exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and environmental hazards such as disruptive people, imminent danger, and a threatening environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to balance, climb, crouch, reach extending hands and arms in any direction, stand, walk, pull, lift, grasp, talk, see, hear and use substantial repetitive motions of the wrists, hands and fingers. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, push, finger (picking, pinching or otherwise working primarily with fingers), grasp (applying pressure to an object with fingers or palms), and feel. The employee is occasionally required to crawl. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
