Position Overview Our construction equipment group is seeking a full‑time resident

heavy equipment shop service diesel technician / mechanic

with the classification of

Shop Technician

to service our general product lines with a focus on power systems, but will also work on all makes/models for our product portfolio. This position will report to the

South Elgin, IL

branch and is a union position as part of

Operating Engineers Local 701 .

Responsibilities

Diagnose and repair any systems problem that occurs for the majority (greater than 50%) of equipment the company sells.

Perform cleaning, maintenance, visual inspection, removal, installation, disassembly, assembly, parts reuse evaluation, reconditioning, ordering the correct parts, measuring, adjusting, diagnosing, testing, troubleshooting, and equipment failure analysis of assigned service department or specialized area.

Perform minor welding, fabricating, and machining repairs as required.

Meet or exceed quoted labor for repairs related to this level, with minimal rework.

Complete inspections.

Implement optional accessories.

General repairs.

Incorporate Alta's Guiding Principles into daily activities.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Maintain consistent, regular, and reliable attendance and be ready for work at the designated start time.

Qualifications

Four years of previous heavy equipment or over the road (OTR) repair experience is required.

Minimum of 2 years of previous power systems repair experience is required.

Volvo Penta engine experience is highly preferred.

Previous mechanic repair experience (forklift, heavy equipment, diesel, automotive) and military or reserve experience with MOS or NEC codes (63B, 63H, 63S, 63W, 63Y, 91B, 91H, 91L, 91M or CM) is beneficial.

Strong working knowledge of power train and generation systems.

Excellent mechanical aptitude.

Good written and verbal communication skills.

Good time management skills.

Ability to work after hours as needed.

Must have a clean driving record and a valid driver’s license to drive company vehicle.

Possess own tools.

A positive attitude and high energy.

Computer proficiency – Microsoft Outlook, Volvo VCADS.

Language skills – intermediate reading and interpreting documents, writing routine reports, speaking to groups.

Mathematical skills – basic arithmetic with units of American money and weight/volume/distance.

Reasoning ability – intermediate level, applying common sense to instructions and problem solving.

Physical Demands / Work Environment

Physical/Sensory Functions: Regularly stand, walk, use hands, reach; frequently talk/hear, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; occasionally sit.

Lift and/or Move Functions: Regularly lift up to 25 lbs; frequently lift 26‑50 lbs; occasionally lift 51‑100+ lbs.

Work Environment: Regularly near moving mechanical parts; frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions; occasionally in wet or humid conditions (non-weather), risk of electrical shock, vibration.
