EQUIPMENT REPAIR TECHNICIAN – Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services Location:

Central State Hospital, Petersburg, Virginia.

Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277‑bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly served citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870. A new, modern CSH will be completed in 2027. CSH maintains the only maximum‑security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). It also provides 166 beds for individuals in the community who need inpatient care and for those in the criminal justice system.

About the Position:

This role supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of CSH’s fleet. The Equipment Repair Technician will perform regularly scheduled maintenance and mechanical repairs on combustible engines and related electrical and safety equipment for motorized vehicles used by CSH and HWDMC. Responsibilities include:

Diagnosing and repairing diesel and gasoline‑powered equipment using computer‑based diagnostic tools.

Performing safe vehicle shop practices, using hand tools, power tools, and vehicle lifts.

Interpreting repair manuals and applying technical information.

Carrying out heavy manual labor during vehicle repairs.

Supporting documentation and diagnostics with basic computer operations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Documented training and work experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and motorized equipment.

Valid Virginia driver’s license.

Additional Considerations:

Certified welder.

Valid Virginia commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement.
