Drill Operator – ITG Communications, LLC
The Drill Operator performs a variety of tasks, operating heavy to light excavation equipment as well as placing and burying fiber pathways, including operation of horizontal/directional drill rigs, locating equipment and product support equipment. The role focuses on the construction of telecommunications and Fiber‑to‑the‑Home (FttH) networks.
Responsibilities
Operates excavation equipment for installation of underground telecommunications cable conduit, including fiber optic cable.
Prepares construction sites for building, demolition, or excavation.
Transports tools and other construction equipment to and from construction sites.
Responsible for avoiding existing cables and digging in accordance with blueprints and designated plans.
Performs all duties according to prescribed safety procedures and uses appropriate safety equipment.
Set up and clean up the work site including traffic and pedestrian control.
Inspects and fuels vehicle prior to beginning shift.
Performs routine maintenance and repairs.
Reads utility locates and coordinates day lighting of these facilities.
Ensures all applicable permits and locates are complete and on site.
Inspects work in progress to ensure that workmanship conforms to specifications.
Operates construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications.
Ensures sites are kept clean and safe.
Requirements Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent, and at least one (1) year experience. Vocational school training or apprenticeship preferred.
On‑the‑job training offered. Must be available to work long periods including evenings and weekends when necessary.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, sit
Use hands to handle or feet
Reach with hands and arms
Climb and balance
Stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl
Lift up to 50 lbs regularly, and up to 100 lbs as needed
Maintain all safety expectations
Work outdoors for extended periods
Exposed to extreme weather conditions
Prolonged periods of operating heavy machinery
Operate machinery in all weather conditions and terrains
Key Competencies, Skills, Abilities
Extensive knowledge of heavy machinery operation and capabilities.
Ability to read building plans related to structural concrete and land grades.
Excellent mechanical skills.
Follow instructions.
Work as a team.
Oral communication skills.
