POSITION SUMMARY: The Certified Aquatic Instructor Lead is an instructional position that provides pool deck and program supervision. The purpose is to support lifeguards and instructors by responding to member/user questions and facilitate program quality by assisting instructors and engaging parents in the supervision and progression of their children.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Provides supervision of the pool deck area and programming
Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
Monitor the flow of children/ users between classes
Assist instructors in maintaining quality program delivery and following YMCA curriculum.
Answer member questions and provide assistance
Assist staff in handling any situations that may occur on the pool deck and class
Trained in the emergency action plan and the role they play
Attends all staff meetings and training as required
Adheres to all YMCA of South Hampton Roads policies, procedures, rules, regulations and best practices
Performs and adheres to safety, program delivery, and association uniform standards
Assist in all areas as assigned and completes all projects and assignments as assigned by the supervisor, including promotion of survey completion, distribution of certificate of achievement on the final class and inservice.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be a Certified Aquatic Instructor.
Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor v6, AHSI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent course from American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or National Safety Council). Any BLS certification is only good for one year.
Have experience working with the public and dealing with conflict. Prior customer service experience preferred.
Preferred minimum age of 18 years.
Minimum of 6 months as a Certified Aquatics Instructor
Due to the leadership nature of this position the Certified Aquatic Instructor Lead should be mature, responsible, and possess strong decision making and customer service skills
Completed Aquatic Lead Academy including: YSHR Listen First, YUSA Teaching Techniques for Individuals with Disabilities and Diversity of Ability, YUSA Adult Learning Concepts, YSHR Inservice Leader.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper skill development at each stage
2. Ability to lift and pull equipment 50 pounds and to lift a small to average size child
3. Ability to stand for long periods of time
4. Must be in good physical condition to teach classes
5. Must have ability to work inside and outside (i.e. humidity, hot, cold, inclement weather conditions)
6. Must have ability to concentrate in a loud environment
