About the Organization HSCS is comprised of nine psychiatric hospitals, one youth residential treatment facility, and thirteen state‑supported living centers. The psychiatric hospitals are a hub of excellence for forensic mental health and complex psychiatric care, with all facilities accredited by The Joint Commission. They provide state‑of‑the‑art treatment that is recovery‑oriented and science‑based.

Position Overview The Psychiatric Nursing Assistant III (PNA III) performs complex rehabilitative patient care services in an inpatient setting. Under the clinical supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the PNA III provides emergency, health, and personal care services, interacts with patients therapeutically, observes, reports, and documents patient conditions and behaviors in an electronic record, and participates in individualized and unit‑based programming.

Essential Job Functions

Attend work consistently and maintain the assigned shift schedule, including overtime as required.

Implement individualized recovery plans and provide ongoing support to help patients reach goals.

Use therapeutic, person‑centered communication to engage patients promptly and effectively.

Assist with activities of daily living, hygiene, and eating to promote independence and self‑care.

Accompany patients to appointments as needed.

Communicate effectively with team members to promote a positive workplace.

Participate in recovery or admissions teams and provide collaborative verbal and written communication about patients.

Use basic computer skills to document and report patient care information clearly and concisely.

Assist the licensed nurse in monitoring patients for medication administration or treatment, including monitoring vital signs.

Promote a safe environment through continuous environmental awareness and patient engagement.

Encourage patient participation in classes and programs, and co‑facilitate groups as assigned.

Respond to crisis or psychiatric emergency situations using the least restrictive intervention under RN supervision.

Perform CPR, Heimlich techniques, and use an AED according to American Heart Association standards.

Provide the RN with timely, clinically relevant patient information.

Guide PNA I and II in performing duties assigned by an RN when the PNA IV is absent.

Participate in disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activations as required, which may involve alternate shift patterns or locations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of patient care techniques and recovery programs.

Proficiency with basic computer skills.

Effective interpersonal and leadership skills.

Ability to take and interpret vital signs.

Ability to read, write, and understand English.

Ability to provide patient care, administer first aid and CPR, and conduct TIPS.

Ability to work with others and accept supervision.

Ability to train and guide others.

Licensure and Certification Requirements If transporting patients, a valid Texas driver license is required, or the license must be obtained no later than 90 days after hire. A CPR certification must be obtained within the first 60 days of employment.

Initial Screening Criteria

Minimum of 2 years of work experience.

One year of psychiatric patient experience or direct care required.

Additional Information Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, and Employee Misconduct. Males aged 18‑25 must register with the Selective Service. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state‑operated facility.

Flexibility in work hours may be required, including overtime and extended hours.

Compliance with the HHSC immunization policy and state hospital procedures is required. Employees are required to be vaccinated according to contact level, and in certain cases may need to wear a mask or take protective measures if influenza vaccination is declined.
