The pipe layer will be responsible for laying piping systems to carry a variety of utilities. You will also help install pipes for septic systems and storm drainage, using a variety of power and hand tools. A candidate should have strong mechanical skills and manual dexterity, ideally having completed an apprenticeship with an experienced pipe layer or possessing generalized construction experience as a pipe layer.
Essential Functions
Digging and grading trenches to place pipe.
Laying sections of pipe and completing connections between pipe sections.
Making connections to lines including sewer lines, water lines, and storm sewers.
Determining grade of trenching using tools such as lasers and transit levels.
Operating cutting equipment to cut various types of piping materials.
Operating small powered equipment including tampers.
Cutting, fitting, and sealing various types of piping.
Burying pipes and cleaning up the job site.
Performing related duties as needed.
Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED certificate.
Completion of an apprenticeship (preferred).
Construction experience.
Manual dexterity.
Blueprint reading skills (preferred).
Effective communication with crew members in written and spoken form.
Logical thinking about work and comparison of site conditions with project designs.
Ability to perform strenuous tasks with hands.
Ability to kneel, bend, and lift heavy materials.
Ability to measure accurately and read specifications.
Working Conditions Normal on-site construction field work. Employees are frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration, with occasional exposure to extreme conditions such as inclement weather, heat, humidity, dust, and asphalt. The noise level can be loud.
Typical Physical Needs Requires prolonged bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires eye‑hand coordination and manual dexterity. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight. May need to climb stairs, ladders, and/or scaffolding and lift up to 30 lbs.
