Position Title Public Safety Officer – PT
Position Summary Provides routine police services which include: the protection of life and property; foot and motorized patrol of assigned areas; enforcement of state laws, city ordinances, and College rules and regulations. This position conducts investigations of incidents and prepares reports to document a broad spectrum of occurrences.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Ensures the safety and security of Spelman College staff, facilities, students, and visitors.
Ensures that all campus rules and regulations are enforced.
Enforces campus traffic laws, rules and regulations.
Conducts investigations, collects evidence, and testifies in court.
Conducts foot and/or motorized patrols of assigned areas.
Writes incident reports and interviews victims and witnesses.
Functions as communications dispatcher answering phones and short wave radios and performs related clerical tasks.
Required Qualifications High School diploma or GED plus a minimum of two years of full‑time experience in a public safety or security capacity with a high degree of public contact.
Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine appropriate action, maintain self‑discipline, react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions, cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.
Ability to obtain accurate information through interview, interrogation, and observation; work cooperatively with the public and fellow employees.
Good communication skills: express ideas clearly, prepare comprehensive records and reports; understand and execute oral and written instructions.
Basic computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite to prepare records, reports, and e‑mails.
Work Schedule and Transportation Must be able to work on an as‑needed basis and rotate to various shifts as staffing needs change or as required for special details.

Physical Demands Standing, walking, sitting, handling office supplies, operating computer and other office equipment, talking, hearing. Reaching with hands and arms. Occasional stooping, climbing, crawling, lifting or moving up to 25 pounds. Ability to physically defend self or others and effect apprehension of suspects. Vision requirements include close, distance, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Certifications and Licenses Must be eligible for certification as a Peace Officer under Georgia POSQ guidelines at the time of employment.
Current valid Georgia driver’s license required.
Drug Test Position requires passing a pre‑employment drug test.
