Eligibility Requirements

• 21 years of age at time of hire
• Citizen of the United States
• Graduation from high school, technical school, or an equivalent as certified by the State Department of Education

Other Requirements

• Applicants must be of good character.
• Applicants with a criminal record, dishonorable discharge from any police or fire department, or from the Armed Forces of the United States are ineligible.
• Must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions, read and write in English without difficulty, make clear written reports, and deal tactfully with the public.
• Permanent residence within a reasonable distance of Town of Vernon as specified by the Chief of Police and Town Administrator.
• Weight in proportion to height; full physical fitness; normal color vision (20/20 correctable) and normal hearing; non-smoker.
• Valid driver's license.
• Upon conditional offer, physical, psychological, and polygraph examinations required.

Fitness Test Requirement

Applicants must obtain a Complete Health & Injury Prevention Inc. (CHIP) card showing successful completion of the Connecticut POST physical ability assessment.

Essential Functions of the Position

• Patrol on foot or in car in assigned area to prevent and detect violations.
• Maintain order and protect life and property.
• Makes arrests and facilitates arrest procedures.
• Testifies in court as required.
• Investigates accidents and offenses and may conduct detective investigations when assigned.
• Logs accurate reports and records; directs traffic and operates traffic signals.
• Operates under supervision of Sergeant or superior officer.
• Performs related duties as required.

Testing Requirements

• CHIP test: must have valid CHIP card by closing date.
• Written test: pass Connecticut Police Chief Written test with 70% or greater.
• Oral interview: may be invited after written test score ≥80% (as per department needs).
