Seasonal Archeologist – National Park Service

Apply for this seasonal position at the National Park Service. The work will be located in Interior Region 2, specifically at Kennesaw National Battlefield Park and Fort Frederica National Monument.

These are 2026 Summer Seasonal positions, open to the first 100 applicants or until December 30, 2025—whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 EST on the closing day will receive consideration.

Duties

  • Serve as an advisor to park staff and management on cultural resources.
  • Identify, evaluate, and monitor cultural resources; identify potential threats and make recommendations on status and mitigation.
  • Determine research needs and coordinate efforts to obtain research through programs, grants, and contracts.
  • Review archaeological research project proposals, scopes of work, and task directives for planning and management purposes.
  • Plan and conduct archaeological research for planning documents, including general management plans, resources management plans, environmental impact statements, environmental assessments, archaeological overviews and assessments, and field investigations.
  • Design, implement, and participate in multi‑phased archaeological projects involving documentary, archival, collections research, field investigations (survey and excavation), and laboratory analysis.
  • Provide comprehensive, scientifically sound answers to inquiries from managers and others.
  • Use automated methods of data collection, analysis, or illustration.
  • Input data into digital form and use computer applications for data management.

Conditions of Employment

  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program required.
  • Operation of a government (or private) motor vehicle required; a valid driver’s license must be provided along with a Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record. Certified driving records from all states must be submitted.
  • Uniform required; a uniform allowance will be provided. Compliance with NPS uniform standards required.
  • Work may be required on weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Travel overnight may be required, up to one night per month.
  • Completion of training and maintenance of a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority may be required.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date unless otherwise stated. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit, your resume must clearly indicate the duties, responsibilities, start and end dates, and full or part‑time hours worked.

Basic Requirements for the Archeology 0193 series

  • Education that included three semester hours each in the following course areas:
    • History of archeology
    • Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa
    • Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part of a major geographical area
    • Theory and methods of archeology (typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques)
  • Academic coursework in related areas: geography, geology, environmental studies, scientific writing, and/or surveying.
  • Archeological field school experience.
  • Combination of education and experience equivalent to the above, or four years of archeological work experience that includes field experience and the ability to act as a crew chief under a higher grade archeologist.

Additional Minimum Professional Qualifications for GS‑09

  • Graduate degree in archeology, anthropology, or a closely related field.
  • At least one full year of full‑time professional experience comparable to the GS‑07 grade level in the federal service, including at least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archeology, and demonstrated ability to carry research to completion. Hours worked must be included.

Volunteer Experience

Volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations will receive credit as paid and unpaid experience.

Additional Information

Temporary seasonal employees must work no more than a combined total of less than 1,040 hours per year to maintain non‑competitive rehire eligibility. Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding, project needs, performance, or other considerations.
