Job Overview
The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University seeks dynamic and diverse individuals to fill seasonal positions. This Seasonal Gardener position is a six‑month appointment beginning in early spring 2026. Five openings are available, Monday through Friday.
Responsibilities
- Weeding, mulching, and brush chipping.
- Pruning shrubs and trees.
- Transplanting seedlings and mature plants.
- Watering and irrigation maintenance.
- Implementing IPM practices.
- Mowing, string trimming, and leaf cleanup.
- Litter management.
- Operating and maintaining equipment.
- Landscape maintenance and collection renovation projects as needed.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Schedule and Working Conditions
40 hours per week (7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Tuesday through Saturday) with a one‑half‑hour unpaid meal break daily. Position is based solely on campus in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts; may require in‑person presence during emergencies.
Qualifications
- Minimum of one year experience in horticulture or a related field.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand for eight hours a day.
- Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
- Availability to serve as essential staff during weather‑related emergencies.
