Description of Duties / Essential Functions
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department (HPARD) is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe, well‑maintained parks and affordable programming. HPARD seeks an Aquatic Center Supervisor (Seasonal) to join its Recreation & Wellness Aquatics team.
- Plan, organize, and coordinate social and athletic activities.
- Inspect the pool daily for hazardous conditions that may have occurred overnight.
- Complete same‑day work orders for repair.
- Enforce the pool facility rules.
- Maintain and operate basic pool maintenance and water safety equipment (vacuuming, brushing pool walls, cleaning filters, setting up equipment such as seats, ropes, umbrellas, rescue tubes, backboards, etc.).
- Check chemical readings every hour.
- Assist the Regional Aquatic Manager in planning, organizing, and coordinating programs and special events.
- Prepare reports, timesheets, and other documents for submission by the stated deadline.
- Provide site and program information on services.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
- Requires stooping or bending, moderate to heavy lifting up to 80 pounds.
- Exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture, and unpleasant air conditions.
- Routine exposure to soiled materials and light to hazardous chemical substances and cleaning solutions.
Minimum Requirements
- Ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and basic written instructions. Basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Four months of experience as a lifeguard or water safety instructor.
- Completion of HPARD Supervisor Training Workshop within three months of entry into classification.
License Requirements
- Must obtain American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification offered by HPARD Aquatic Services Section in the current year of the operating season before completion of the hiring process.
Preferences
- Already possess the required certification from a city‑approved agency.
- Have considerable knowledge of pool operational procedures involving backwashing system and pump priming.
- Completed HPARD Supervisor Training Workshop within one month of entry into classification.
- Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants who possess the necessary qualifications and are among the most qualified candidates in accordance with Executive Order 1‑6.
Selection / Skills Tests Required

- New applicants must successfully pass a Lifeguard Swim Evaluation for consideration.

Safety Impact Position
- Yes – The position is subject to random drug testing. If a promotional position, a job‑assignment drug test is required.
Salary Information
Pay Grade 14.
