Part‑time Police Officer (P.O.S.T. Certified)
Base pay range: $30.03/hr - $30.03/hr
Maximum of 56 hours per biweekly pay period and minimum of 12 hours per week. Part‑time positions may require work on holidays, nights, and weekends. Applicants must be available Monday‑Friday 7 am‑6 pm or Friday‑Sunday dawn‑to‑dusk. Part‑time positions are not eligible for any employment benefits.
Job Description
- Under general supervision performs a variety of duties involved in the enforcement of laws and prevention of crimes, including providing general courtroom security, coordinating the transfer of inmates from a local holding facility to required court appearances, patrolling and monitoring parks, controlling traffic flow, enforcing state and local traffic regulations, and participating in and conducting a variety of criminal investigations.
- Provides a high level of customer service, integrates the community into policing activities, participates in community‑based police activities and programs, and performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of law‑enforcement services and activities. Performs other duties as required.
Essential Functions
- Provides general courtroom security and coordinates the transfer of inmates from local holding facilities to required court appearances; participates in court activities; responds to court subpoenas; assists in preparing case files and evidence for court presentation; testifies and presents evidence during court.
- Patrols designated areas of the City in car, by foot, or other means to preserve law and order, discover and prevent the commission of crimes, and enforce traffic and other laws and ordinances; maintains awareness of and remains alert for wanted suspects, known criminals, stolen vehicles, missing persons, traffic violators, and crimes in progress; issues warnings and citations.
- Responds to calls for the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, general public service calls, and complaints including those involving automobile accidents, traffic hazards, misdemeanor and felony incidents, domestic disturbances, property control, civil complaints, animal control, and related incidents; provides assistance at a variety of public service type calls that are non‑criminal in nature.
- Conducts preliminary investigations at scenes of incidents to which summoned or observed; determines whether a crime has been committed; identifies, collects, preserves, processes, photographs, and books evidence, locates and interviews victims and witnesses, and interrogates suspects.
- Prepares and serves search and arrest warrants; apprehends and arrests offenders for crimes committed under federal, state, and local laws and codes; controls and effectively processes individuals under the influences of drugs or alcohol or other potentially hostile situations.
- Performs a full range of traffic enforcement duties; observes, monitors, and controls routine and unusual traffic conditions; assists and advises motorists; uses radar to detect speed; issues citations and warnings; investigates traffic accidents; coordinates traffic patterns during special events; conducts special enforcement details including DUI, seatbelt, and child safety seat checkpoints.
- Directs traffic at fires, special events, and other emergency situations; provides traffic and crowd control at parades, festivals, riots, and other events.
- Provides assistance or backup support to other officers, emergency medical providers, fire department personnel, state, federal, and local law‑enforcement agencies, other public service agencies; provides emergency response on a twenty‑four hour basis as needed.
- Processes required paperwork during scheduled tours of duty; requests and processes status reports for driver's licenses, criminal histories, and other information through NCIC and GCIC databases.
- Serves as liaison and public relations officer for the assigned area; establishes and preserves a good relationship with the public; may develop reliable informants and provide intelligence information to divisional and/or departmental personnel; attends community meetings and neighborhood associations on a regular and ad‑hoc basis.
- Contacts and cooperates with other law‑enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses; may respond to requests for assistance from agencies outside City for mutual aid in the suppression of civil disturbances, apprehension of criminals or other related requests.
- Participates in continuous training to enhance law‑enforcement skills including defensive driving skills, apprehensions and arrest techniques, investigative skills, and general law‑enforcement skills.
- Performs a variety of administrative and other duties in support of law‑enforcement services, programs, and activities; attends meetings; prepares and submits releases; maintains and calibrates specialized equipment.
- Prepares a variety of reports including those on activities, operations, arrests made, unusual incidents observed; prepares investigative reports and case information.
- Testifies in juvenile, civil, traffic, municipal and criminal courts, and parole and MVR hearings; prepares and presents evidence; responds to mandatory court calls during irregular hours.
- Answers questions from the public concerning local and State laws, procedures, and activities of Department.
- Receives, searches, books, fingerprints, and transports prisoners.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.) Basic Law Enforcement Certification; minimum 2 years law‑enforcement / patrol experience.
- Must possess a valid U.S. Driver's License and must possess a Georgia Driver's License at time of employment.
- Must successfully complete all steps in the hiring process, including a comprehensive background investigation.
- Must successfully pass a post‑offer polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, medical evaluation, and drug screen.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Writes clearly, accurately, concisely, and legibly using correct English, grammatical construction, and spelling; reads and interprets complex technical documents in English.
- Expresses himself/herself in a clear, distinct, and understandable manner when speaking to individuals, to people of different socio‑economic levels, before various public and community groups, and when testifying.
- Exhibits good customer‑service skills; ability to interpret, apply, and make decisions in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local policies, laws, and regulations.
- Must have substantive knowledge of and experience with community policing principles and practices and gang and drug‑oriented programs/strategies.
