Part-Time Interpreter II

Inside Higher Ed invites qualified candidates to join as an Advanced-Language Interpreter for Lone Star College students, faculty, staff, and visitors who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Location & Schedule

University Park, University Park System Office, LSC-System Office, UP
Interpreting assignments occur at a variety of times and locations within the LSC service area, including evenings and weekends.

Purpose & Scope

Provide advanced sign-language interpretation services to maintain institutional compliance with Section 504 and ADA, advancing communication equity in learning and workplace environments.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provide sign-language translation (voice and signing) for Deaf/Hearing clients and all LSC participants in all requested locations and settings with appropriate language and register level.
  • Analyze source language content, meaning, and intent to accurately deliver information to the target audience.
  • Communicate client information, status, and any concerns or challenges to supervisor.
  • Research new or complex information to interpret accurately and mentor lower-level interpreters.
  • Model positive inclusive employee behavior, attend department meetings, and share process improvement ideas with supervisor and team.
  • Perform other reasonable related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Fluency in sign language and English, preserving meaning, tone, and emotional value.
  • Advanced-level interpreting skill (BEI Advanced or equivalent) and mentor lower-level interpreters.
  • Availability for varied times and locations, including evenings and weekends.
  • Confidentiality, discretion and adherence to LSC Policy on Students with Disability Rights and FERPA rules.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture, Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct, and related federal/state/local regulations.
  • Proficiency in basic computer use (typing, internet search, word processing, calendar software).
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational skills with attention to detail and follow-through.

Physical Abilities

  • Extended use of fingers, hands, and arms for sign-language communication, with fine dexterity.
  • Close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Standing, walking, walking around to maintain line of sight during various settings (campsus tours, clinical settings).

Work Schedule & Conditions

  • Interpreting assignments include evenings and weekends across LSC service area.
  • Work performed mainly in climate-controlled office, classroom, meeting, and convention environments with minimal safety hazards.
  • PC workstation, video phone and/or sign-language related software may be required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years related work experience, or equivalent education/experience combination.
  • Active BEI Advanced certification (or equivalent) required.
  • Reliable transportation to travel between assignments within LSC Service Area.

Compensation & Benefits

Hourly Pay Rate: $56.44 per hour.
