Position

Waste Management Systems Technician – operations, maintenance, and repair of landfill gas collection, leachate collection, flare station, wheel wash, and groundwater treatment plant. Monitor and submit samples of landfill gas, groundwater, stormwater, and landfill leachate to ensure compliance with facility permits.

Job Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain landfill collection and treatment equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, and operational checks of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Collect, analyze, and submit samples of landfill gas, groundwater, stormwater, and landfill leachate.
  • Respond to emergency and special operating conditions for active methane gas field, forced main air, and discharge pipeline.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge Of

  • Operation of pumps, motors, and valves.
  • Gas compressors and valve control systems.
  • Lubrication requirements.
  • Maintenance tools, materials, and equipment for mechanical systems.
  • Pipefitting techniques.
  • Confined space entry safety.
  • Office procedures and computer applications.
  • Basic arithmetic.
  • English usage, grammar, and spelling.

Ability To

  • Establish cooperative working relationships.
  • Communicate clearly, verbally and in writing.
  • Understand and follow instructions.
  • Perform skilled manual labor tasks for repair and preventive maintenance.
  • Learn procedures for emergency response.
  • Use computer equipment for data entry.

  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records.

Minimum Qualifications

Either: 1. Two years of full‑time paid experience in maintenance, construction and/or repair of mechanical and electrical components at landfills or related facilities. 2. Completion of 60 semester units (or 90 quarter units) with at least 30 semester units (or 45 quarter units) in Mechanical‑Electrical Technology, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.

Physical and Working Conditions

  • Perform manual labor and tasks requiring manual dexterity.
  • Stand on a ladder while performing tasks.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds without assistance; heavier items with assistance.
  • Frequently bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, and reach above the shoulder.
  • Push/pull equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Work in unsteady footing and confined spaces.
  • Wear respiratory protection if required.
  • Work in enclosed areas with temperatures over 100°F or below 20°F.
  • Work on uneven terrain and outside in all weather conditions.
  • Work around dust, noise, and odors.
