Overview
Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications to fill current and future vacancies in all locations throughout Santa Barbara County, including Custody Jail Facilities (Santa Barbara Main Jail, Santa Maria Jail). Position Responsibilities
- Maintain inventory of linen, clothing and supplies; operate detainees' property room; accept deliveries; transport supplies.
- Order and issue linen and clothing; coordinate laundry services; order supplies; accept deliveries; check invoices; distribute goods; arrange supplies on shelves; maintain inventory records.
- Supervise inmates or detainees in work assignments; perform or supervise housekeeping tasks (painting, cleaning, light repairs); operate yard equipment; assist with maintenance requests.
- Lift, move, and transport heavy and bulky items; write simple reports and memoranda on lost property and disciplinary problems.
- Use computer to enter data for inmate property record, order and inventory supplies, and linens.
- Issue and deliver office supplies and equipment; oversee mail handling and courier services as needed.
- Transport vehicles to the County garage and to other county locations; monitor inventory and condition of safety equipment; arrange vehicle maintenance and repairs; maintain vehicle service records.
- Assist the public in person or by phone.
- May assist food service workers as needed.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Combination of training, education and/or experience that provides required knowledge and abilities.
Knowledge of English grammar, basic math for supply orders and inventory.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; work independently; keep accurate records; use computer; perform minor building maintenance tasks; communicate effectively with inmates and public; maintain appropriate relationships; learn to operate forklift.
Physical requirements: lift up to 50 pounds; continuous standing; exposure to hazardous materials; valid California Class C driver’s license.
Selection Process

- Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) – complete by deadline.
- Computerized Skill Assessment – score at least 70; placement on employment list.
Veteran’s preference points available for eligible veterans (5 points for veterans, 10 points for disabled veterans).
Background Investigation
Polygraph examination, background investigation, live scan fingerprinting. Candidates must pass polygraph and background investigation at all phases.
