Director, Employee Health & Safety The Director, Employee Health & Safety is responsible for developing, leading, and continuously improving the company’s safety, health, and environmental (HSE) programs across all construction operations. This role sets the enterprise safety strategy while maintaining a strong field presence to ensure practical, compliant, and effective execution at active job sites.

The Director serves as a trusted advisor to Operations and Project Leadership, fostering a proactive safety culture that prioritizes employee well‑being, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation while supporting productivity and project delivery.

Key Responsibilities Safety Strategy & Leadership

Develop and execute a comprehensive safety and health strategy aligned with company values, operational goals, and regulatory requirements.

Champion a “safety-first” culture across all construction sites, offices, and project teams.

Serve as the subject matter expert for OSHA, MSHA (if applicable), and state/local safety regulations.

Partner with executive leadership to integrate safety into business planning and operational decision‑making.

Field Operations & Site Safety

Provide leadership and oversight for site‑specific safety programs across multiple active construction projects.

Ensure consistent implementation of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs), and site‑specific safety plans.

Conduct regular jobsite audits, inspections, and safety walkthroughs; identify trends and corrective actions.

Support project teams with pre‑construction planning, risk assessments, and safety staffing plans.

Compliance & Risk Management

Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local health and safety regulations.

Lead incident reporting, investigations, and root cause analyses for recordable injuries, near misses, and serious incidents.

Oversee workers’ compensation programs, return‑to‑work initiatives, and injury management processes.

Maintain accurate OSHA logs, EMR tracking, and safety performance reporting.

Training & Development

Design and oversee safety training programs including onboarding, toolbox talks, supervisor training, and specialized certifications.

Ensure required safety training and certificates are current for all employees and subcontractors.

Develop safety leadership capabilities among superintendents, project managers, and foremen.

Establish and enforce subcontractor safety qualification, onboarding, and monitoring processes.

Ensure subcontractor compliance with company safety standards and contractual requirements.

Collaborate with Procurement and Legal on safety‑related contract language and enforcement.

Track, analyze, and report key safety metrics (TRIR, DART, EMR, near misses, audits, corrective actions).

Use data and field feedback to drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Prepare safety reports and presentations for executive leadership and clients as needed.

Qualifications Required

Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).

10+ years of progressive safety leadership experience in construction or heavy industrial environments.

In-depth knowledge of OSHA standards and construction safety best practices.

Experience leading safety programs across multiple jobsites and geographic regions.

Proven ability to influence field leadership and drive cultural change.

Preferred

CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CHST, or similar certification.

Experience with large‑scale commercial, infrastructure, or industrial construction projects.

Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.

Experience working with union and non‑union workforces.
