Job Summary
Assist surgical team during operative procedures by preparing sterile equipment for the operation and passing instruments, sponges, and sutures to the operating team. Assist with inventory, sterilization of instruments, prepare and select equipment for procedures, transfer patients as needed, turnover and transfer of instruments to CSPD/Decontamination, and return equipment to its place. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Intermediate: High school diploma or GED; certification or satisfactory completion of an equivalent surgical technology training program, or a program pending immediate accreditation; highly motivated and organized; good interpersonal/team skills.
Senior level: High school diploma or GED; completion of an accredited surgical technologist program; minimum three years of experience as a surgical technologist.
Both: Commitment to contributing to a positive department culture; demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and take direction; ability to prioritize tasks quickly.
Desired Qualifications
Experience scrubbing any of the following: spine, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, oral‑maxillofacial, and thoracic.
Experience as a surgical technologist.
Ability to scrub all services.
Physical Requirements This position requires moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.
Work Schedule
Hours: 36–40 hours per week.
Shift: Day/Night (varying start times).
On–call, weekend, and holiday obligation.
Modes of Work Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time.
Union Affiliation This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U‑M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
Background Screening Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre‑employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third‑party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre‑employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U‑M campuses.
