Position Summary The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

Responsibilities

Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.

Contributes to team decision‑making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities.

Deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decisions that may affect the work of the team.

Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well‑defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.

Conducts engineering and related studies.

Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight, with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.

Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies.

Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.

Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.

Maintains accurate records and files, and supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of complex EMS problems with the ability to visualize long‑term results and assess impacts on a system‑wide basis.

Conducts engineering and related studies with full technical responsibility for planning and coordinating complex projects; applies extensive technical expertise to manage projects and disseminate knowledge to enhance the organizational unit’s competitive position.

Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures; demonstrates ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes and develops standards relevant to the EMS.

Keeps abreast of new developments, technologies, procedures and equipment.

Works with IT and EMS teammates to ensure proper cyber security, NERC and O&M compliance for EMS environment.

Maintains and exercises in depth knowledge of EMS advanced software applications (State Estimator, Contingency Analysis, Network).

Provides leadership in the development of corporate positions on technical matters related to the future direction of EMS.

Serves on a 24×7 callout rotation.

Required / Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Four (4) or more years related work experience.

In lieu of a bachelor’s degree(s) AND 4 year(s) related work experience listed above, a bachelor’s degree in another field of study and a master’s in engineering.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.

Experience in the utility industry.

Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.

Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.

Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.

Good written and oral communication skills.

Extensive experience with General Electric Grid EMS/DMS systems.

In depth knowledge of NERC CIP cyber security standards.

Broad experience with Electric Transmission systems, including NERC transmission reliability standards (BA, TOP, etc.).

Comprehensive experience with real time computer systems, including programming languages (C++, FORTRAN, etc.), scripting languages (PERL, etc.).

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to form and maintain positive working relationships with teammates, peers and clients and to coordinate between team members, business units, support groups, corporate areas, contractors, and vendors to ensure appropriate communication and problem resolution.

Demonstrated ability to develop processes/procedures for new technologies or changing business needs to ensure compliance with all applicable standards, regulations and company requirements.

Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in the development of corporate positions on technical matters related to the future direction of EMS.

Working Conditions Hybrid — Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.

Specific Requirements

Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

A master’s degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Travel Requirements 5-15%.
