Position Summary The AVP, Accounting Policy will play a critical role in supporting the continued evolution of the finance organization. This individual will serve as the primary authority on technical accounting matters, providing research, interpretation, and application of current and emerging accounting guidance. The role will partner closely with senior finance leaders to ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and Statutory accounting standards, support new transactions and initiatives, and assist with the implementation of new accounting standards. The position will also contribute to financial reporting processes and Sarbanes‑Oxley compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Lead technical accounting research and prepare written documentation for complex transactions, new business initiatives, acquisitions, and contract structures
Partner with controllers and cross‑functional finance teams (including actuarial, investments, tax, and reporting) to provide technical accounting guidance and ensure financial integrity
Evaluate and lead the implementation of new U.S. GAAP and Statutory accounting pronouncements
Monitor emerging accounting and regulatory developments and advise management on financial and operational impacts, including changes affecting statutory annual statements
Represent the organization at relevant industry forums and accounting committees
Support quarterly and annual financial reporting processes, including U.S. GAAP and Statutory filings
Assist in the preparation and review of consolidated audited financial statements
Support the year‑end audit process and serve as a key liaison with internal and external auditors
Collaborate across the organization on finance‑related projects and initiatives
Provide training and guidance to management and staff on technical accounting policies and topics
Qualifications
7+ years of progressive accounting experience
Prior experience in a technical accounting role strongly preferred
Big 4 public accounting experience or a blend of public and private accounting experience
Required experience with life insurance and reinsurance accounting
Deep expertise in U.S. GAAP technical accounting, including ASC 944, 805, 810, 323, 820, as well as CECL and LDTI
Strong knowledge of U.S. Statutory accounting, including SSAP 26, 43, 51, 56, 61, and 86
Advanced ability to research, interpret, and document accounting guidance and policies
Proactive, self‑directed professional with strong judgment and deadline management skills
Strong advisory mindset with the ability to build effective partnerships across finance teams
Experience with accounting standard implementations and special projects preferred
Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex accounting concepts for varied audiences
Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with tools such as BlackLine, NetSuite, or Workiva is a plus
Education & Certifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
