Position Overview and Responsibilities
We are looking for a self‑motivated park service professional to fill a park services specialist position at William J Rish Recreation Area.
Responsibilities include providing visitor services, maintenance, protection, administration, and resource management.
Applicants must possess good visitor service and administrative skills, be able to work independently and perform a variety of skilled trade functions using assorted equipment and tools.
Rotating shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays are required.
Current duties include:
Compliance with Chapter 215.422, F.S. processing requirements.
Establishing and maintaining good public relations and public information programs.
Coordinating private and governmental manpower and financial support systems, visitor service and volunteer programs, and contract oversight.
Assisting in park maintenance and resource management programs.
Developing guided walks, campfire and recreational skill programs for visitors and educational groups.
Designing and producing park‑specific literature and public‑facing media.
Explaining facilities and services, addressing visitor complaints, and maintaining ADA standards.
Planning, coordinating, and participating in special events and activities.
Managing a comprehensive volunteer program, including recruitment, training, placement, and record keeping.
Researching funding sources and preparing grant applications.
Maintaining cultural resource files and coordinating preservation of natural and cultural assets.
Implementing ecological burning and species control programs.
Constructing, maintaining, and repairing park facilities such as trails, boardwalks, campsites, and boat ramps.
Ensuring park security, safety, and vendor liaison functions.
Preparing reports, forms, and logs related to park operations; operating cash registers and reconciliations; using two‑way radios, computers, and other office equipment.
Performing other related duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of:
Florida ecosystems and resource management techniques for natural community restoration.
Cultural resource preservation and restoration techniques.
Technical report writing and effective verbal and written communication principles.
Computers and related software.
FPS volunteer and CSO policies and procedures.
Skill in:
Public speaking, writing, and program presentation.
Producing photographs and slide material.
Ability to:
Use assorted power/gas tools and equipment to perform physical labor.
Handle cash register transactions and reconcile receipts.
Research, plan, and prepare educational, interpretive, and promotional materials and programs.
Work independently, plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Travel occasionally.
Work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Coordinate special events.
Compile, organize, and analyze data, programs, and proposed projects.
Perform a variety of skilled trade functions.
Learn two‑way radio communications equipment.
Maintain a valid driver license.
Successfully complete Ranger Academy.
Successfully complete background and fingerprint check.
Minimum Qualifications
Valid Driver’s License.
Background Screening Requirement Position of Special Trust Requirement.
A Level 2 State and National criminal history check is required before employment and must be approved before the employee commences work.
Where You Will Work William J Rish Recreation Area (WJRRA) is located in Port St. Joe, Florida.
The area covers 100 acres on the Gulf of America and St. Joseph’s Bay and is designed for accessibility.
Current facilities include day‑use beach access, a bay, and an Olympic‑sized swimming pool.
Future developments will add accessible cabins, campsites, a concessionaire, and a dock.
