Position Purpose As a Nurse Practitioner-Hospice-Palliative Care, the employee is an active participant in the provision of care for patients enrolled in hospice, outpatient palliative care, and/or inpatient palliative care. The employee demonstrates a high level of independence and clinical expertise in the management of patients with serious and terminal illnesses by using advanced clinical skills, diagnostic reasoning, and therapeutic interventions. The employee will provide after-hours and weekend call coverage for all service lines on a rotating basis and will be responsible for care plan oversight, ongoing eligibility evaluation, pain and symptom management, collaboration with acute partners, and participation in designated Renown committees, as applicable.

Nature and Scope Nurse practitioners are primary health‑care providers who practice in ambulatory, acute, emergency, critical care, and long‑term care settings. They diagnose and manage acute episodic and chronic illnesses, emphasize health promotion and disease prevention, and teach and counsel individuals, families, and groups.

Skills

Systematically access the health status of persons and families by taking, recording, and interpreting medical histories and performing physical examinations.

Perform or initiate selected diagnostic procedures.

Management of selected persons and families with common, acute, recurrent, or long‑term health problems, including implementation of treatment programs in consultation with the supervising physician.

Prescribe medications consistent with Nevada prescribing laws and DEA privileges.

Evaluate responses to health problems and treatment programs and inform patients or families of the status of the patient’s health and alternatives for care.

Evaluate compliance with agreed treatment programs and modify them based on patient response.

Refer to appropriate health‑care providers.

Treat minor lacerations not involving nerve, tendon, or major blood vessel damage.

Stabilize patients in emergencies until a physician can be consulted.

Perform other acts as dictated by the Nevada Board of Nursing and nurse practitioner certification.

Interpret the role of the nurse practitioner to individuals, families, and other professionals.

Work efficiently, cooperatively, and autonomously in long‑term and acute care facilities.

Comply with NRS 632 and Nevada State Board of Nursing regulations.

Cooperate with the collaborating physician’s responsibilities for the nurse practitioner’s actions.

Attain sufficient specialty knowledge and approach ongoing education, including core APHON programs.

Attend and participate in departmental and Renown Health meetings consistently.

Minimum Qualifications Education:

Must have working‑level knowledge of English, including reading, writing, and speaking; Master’s prepared registered nurse (RN).

Experience:

Two years minimum as an RN required; Six months clinical experience preferred as a Nurse Practitioner.

License(s):

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license in Nevada, a Controlled Substance License to Prescribe issued by Nevada, and a Controlled Substance Registration Certificate issued by the DEA. Valid and current Nevada driver’s license required if performing home palliative care services.

Certification(s):

Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Adult‑Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (A‑GNP), or Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) certification by AANPCB or ANCC required at time of hire. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACL) required; AHA‑approved certification preferred.

Computer / Typing:

Must possess or obtain within 90 days the computer skills necessary for online learning, benefits enrollment, and policy access.

Ability to credential through Renown’s Medical Staff and/or Payor Credentialing as applicable.
