About the Position 36 hours per week, 3 12‑hour shifts, variable days & nights. Rotating weekends and holidays required.

Previous experience as a Nursing Assistant, Patient Care Technician, or similar role is preferred. One year of direct patient care experience is required.

About the Unit The ED is a 28‑bed state‑of‑the‑art emergency department with primarily private rooms and approximately 100 patients per day. It offers Behavioral Health services, sexual assault support, and stabilizes trauma, acute cardiac, and neuro events. The unit prioritizes teamwork and patient care.

Responsibilities

Communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the health care team and demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and other workplace safety.

Report equipment malfunctions and contribute to unit activities such as responding to call lights, calling phones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.

Perform nursing core duties: ADLs (bathe, feed, transport, toileti­ng, ambulate, reposition), vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs), simple dressings, restraint placement and removal, bladder scan, specimen collection, peripheral IV removal, phlebotomy, ticket to ride.

Assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies; report patient status changes and provide instruction to patients and families under RN direction.

Receive and act on feedback, identify learning needs, participate in self‑review, projects, committees, and quality initiatives.

Support department projects, adhere to policies, document in the medical record, transport cardiac‑monitored patients, perform dressing changes, and complete clerical functions as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned and advanced skills such as 12‑lead EKG or basic arrhythmia may be required.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Two years of general healthcare experience meeting Patient Care Technician requirements, OR

One year of direct patient care experience and enrollment in PT/OT/PA program with at least one clinical rotation, OR

One year of direct patient care experience and a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.

Annual completion of professional contributions as determined after hire.

Successful completion of basic information system training.

Microcomputer experience preferred.

Excellent oral and written communication.

EMT, Paramedic, or enrollment in an EMT/Paramedic program preferred.

Successful completion of the UPMC cardiac rhythm course if required.

Ability to transport medications within designated limits.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

CPR (AHA) required within 30 days of hire; ACLS preferred.

New York mandated reporter within 90 days of hire.

New York SCR application within first week of hire.

CCM training required within 6 months of hire and annually thereafter.

Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC).

NY Mandated Reporter Training.

NYS Staff Exclusion List (NYSEL).

NYS Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse (NYSCR).
