LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

University of Alabama at Birmingham . Under general supervision, perform clinical procedures to prepare patients and research participants for treatment or research protocol.
Key Responsibilities
Perform preparation, distribution, cataloging, and storage of lab specimens for testing.
Adhere to specimen identification policies and quality controls.
Utilize lab and hospital information systems and provide general administrative support (filing, record maintenance, client calls, mail delivery).
Assist physician or healthcare team with completion of treatment/protocol.
Perform simple, non-invasive patient procedures according to policy/protocol.
May perform various clerical and/or lab duties as requested.
Respond to unique needs of all patients.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Must be able to recognize the rights and responsibilities of patient confidentiality.
Ability to multi-task.
Must be self-directed/self-motivated.
Must have good communication and interpersonal skills.
Must be able to perform a variety of duties often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.
Must be able to accept responsibility for the direction, control and planning of one's own work.
Must be able to perform effectively when confronted with emergency, critical, unusual or dangerous situations.
Must be able to relate to others in a manner which creates a sense of teamwork and cooperation.
Must be able to communicate effectively with people from every socioeconomic, cultural and educational background.
Hourly Range $15.00-$22.75
Education
Associate's degree in Biological Science or health-related field required. OR equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required or required to be obtained within 30 days of employment.
