About Us The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, preparation, and the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. The department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers. Job Classification The NC08 Correctional Sergeant II is an internal posting open only to current employees.
Description of Work Salary Range: $37,782‑$66,120. This full‑time position (40 hours per week) offers State Benefits. The class involves first‑line supervision of Correctional Officer II’s in medium‑custody facilities, increasing custody and security coverage. Employees assign lower‑level custody staff to specific areas or posts, oversee officer activities and performance, ensure custody and inmate welfare, handle work scheduling for shift coverage, implement operational procedures, and enforce rules and regulations according to policy. The position may serve as Officer‑in‑Charge (OIC) and reports directly to a Correctional Lieutenant II and/or the Correctional Assistant Superintendent. At this level, employees may supervise inmates in restrictive housing.
Management Preferences & Knowledge
Knowledge of overall operation of correctional facilities, applicable policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and correctional methods.
Background check required for eligibility.
Minimum Education and Experience High School or GED diploma plus either: two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, two years of experience as Correctional Officer II, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
