Job Summary Assist the Head Athletics Coach with all aspects of a comprehensive, highly competitive basketball program at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC), including scheduling, scouting, travel arrangements, and monitoring student‑athletes. Develop and administer an academic advising program to guide student‑athletes with career‑and‑academic decisions, academic assistance, and retention.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Knows fundamental concepts, practices, skills and procedures of assisting in a comprehensive, highly competitive community college athletic program.
Needs assistance with administrative, managerial concepts and practices of an assistant coach on a college level. Leadership skills and techniques.
Knowledge of basketball rules, skills, techniques and strategies at the intercollegiate level; athletic training procedures and techniques; risk management, OSHA and exposure control procedures preferred; NJCAA/Region 18 policies and procedures. Knowledge of SLCC admission, registration and completion (graduation) requirements.
Knowledge of NJCAA, NCAA and NAIA eligibility.
Knowledge with computers and Banner software to aid in the registration and maintenance of accurate student‑athlete academic records and computer “online‑program”.
Academic advising skills and procedures.
Analyze, break down and develop strategies of basketball play and skill development; assess through a scouting process opponent skills, strengths, weaknesses, and strategies; teach advanced basketball skills and strategies to intercollegiate student‑athletes; be creative with a degree of objectivity; lead and administer by using interpersonal skills.
Analyze the athletic needs, formulate and strategize promotional marketing plans/systems and implement plans/systems to include short‑range (weekly/daily) and long‑range plans that increase department visibility, attendance, etc.
Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
Additional Responsibilities
Community Engagement: Development and implementation of programs and initiatives to increase awareness of and attendance at SLCC events.
Responsibilities include reaching out to key constituent groups to encourage their support of SLCC athletics.
Key constituents include local businesses, alumni, and SLCC students, staff and faculty. Design, produce and distribute collateral materials including posters and game schedules.
Contact outside groups and arrange for them to participate as halftime entertainment at SLCC events.
Coordinate with the game management staff to ensure these individuals and groups have tickets and prizes for promotional purposes. Work with the coordinator of media relations to assist with the department’s social media outreach initiative.
Academic Support: Develop and administer an academic student‑athlete progress system.
Assist student athletes in the selection and scheduling of classes with the express purpose to move toward graduation by the conclusion of the athlete’s eligibility.
Be familiar with and implement “Degree Works.”
Work closely with faculty and Student Affairs staff to ensure each student athlete remains eligible and on track to graduate.
Prepare documents for appropriate college, conference, and NJCAA awards.
Compliance: Ensure the Athletics Department is compliant with all NJCAA rules and by‑laws including student eligibility.
Act as the department’s liaison and expert on new legislation concerning eligibility.
Prepare all documentation necessary for the NJCAA, SLCC, and the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
Work closely with the Director of Athletics and head coaches when interpreting rules and procedures. Under the direction of the Head Coach, assist in practice organization, scheduling, scouting, team supervision, on‑court coaching team/recruits, travel arrangements, consultation, and monitoring of student athletes.
Responsible for players’ development and individual work sessions during practice.
Assist in recruiting new student‑athletes within the philosophies and guidelines of NJCAA, SLCC, and the Athletic Department.
Coordinate and assist in developing/administering successful men’s basketball camps at SLCC.
Other duties as may be assigned by the head basketball coach to develop and coordinate a total men’s basketball program.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required.
Two (2) years basketball coaching experience in an educational setting (high school, NJCAA, NCAA), or professional level. Part‑time experience may be considered on a prorated basis.
