CAREER OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking a dynamic and safety driven Maintenance & Engineering Manager for our Stevenson, Alabama Paper Mill. In this role, you will provide decisive leadership for all maintenance and engineering functions, ensuring the systems, processes, and reliability strategies that support the Mill are executed with excellence. While the focus is on leading Maintenance and Engineering, you will also partner closely with facility operations to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient performance of all assets. Reporting to the General Manager, you will drive maintenance work systems, resource planning, and reliability improvements that maximize productivity, quality, and cost effectiveness while advancing the company’s overall objectives.
HOW YOU WILL IMPACT WESTROCK
Lead with safety as the uncompromising top priority, modeling safe behaviors and driving proactive risk reduction across all maintenance and engineering activities.
Demonstrate a strong sense of urgency—rapidly assess situations, allocate resources, and implement effective short and long term plans to maintain operational stability.
Elevate work systems and reliability practices, ensuring maintenance processes are disciplined, consistent, and continuously improved.
Develop, manage, and optimize the maintenance budget while balancing operational needs and cost stewardship.
Drive a culture of continuous improvement, enabling teams to streamline workflows, eliminate waste, and strengthen reliability fundamentals through data driven decisions.
Provide strategic and tactical direction for the maintenance and engineering departments to meet current and future organizational needs.
Proactively define, execute, and communicate the Capital Project Improvement Plan, including 5 year outlook and in year project implementation.
Build strong internal partnerships, promoting alignment and teamwork across Operations, Safety, Finance, and other mill functions.
Lead and enforce the safety program for all maintenance personnel and contractors; ensure compliance with Mill, Company, State, and Federal regulations.
Promote a culture of critical thinking, robust troubleshooting, and ownership—strengthening the mill’s capability to identify root causes and prevent recurrence.
Continuously review equipment and system performance to minimize unplanned downtime, strengthen asset reliability, and identify improvement opportunities.
Support and partner with reliability on all preventive, predictive, and condition based maintenance programs—electrical, instrumentation, controls, automation, and mechanical.
Implement and sustain maintenance excellence through EPAM (Enterprise Process Asset Management), with a strong focus on planning, scheduling, and precision maintenance.
Maintain and optimize systems for work order management, spare parts usage, and equipment history tracking; monitor and improve KPIs such as asset utilization, PM/WO completion rates, and maintenance cost performance.
Ensure all maintenance team members and contractors are properly trained, equipped, and motivated to deliver safe, high quality work efficiently.
Provide coaching, development, and performance management to build a high performing, engaged team.
Support and partner with Facilities Manager on long term infrastructure and reliability planning to safeguard future asset performance.
Manage the effective use of internal labor and contractors, including oversight of various long term contract agreements.
Plan and coordinate all annual maintenance shutdowns to ensure flawless execution and safe, timely startup.
Collaborate with Stores and Accounting to maintain optimal spare parts levels and control inventory investments.
Ensure compliance with insurance recommendations, environmental standards, and all city, county, state, and federal requirements.
Manage the full lifecycle of capital and major maintenance projects, including bid packages, budgets, schedules, and issue resolution.
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED
5–15 years of maintenance, engineering, or related leadership experience.
Experience in a unionized environment.
Pulp and paper manufacturing experience preferred.
Exceptional communication skills across all organizational levels—from senior leaders and technical specialists to hourly technicians.
Demonstrated ability to lead a diverse, multi discipline team in both supervisory and technical capacities.
Strong competency with business systems, computer applications, and maintenance management tools.
Ability to implement sustainable systems for cost tracking, forecasting, and reporting in partnership with Accounting.
Proven ability to organize resources, set clear priorities, and drive execution with discipline and urgency.
Strong organizational, strategic thinking, and team building capabilities.
