Nutrition Education Specialist - Temporary County of San Luis Obispo — Public Health Department

About the Position We’re excited to offer a rewarding opportunity to become part of our South County – Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) team as a temporary Nutrition Education Specialist (County Classification: Health Education Specialist I). The position will primarily work out of our WIC office in Grover Beach.

Responsibilities

Conduct nutrition assessments.

Provide personalized nutrition counseling.

Develop care plans tailored to participant needs.

Assist with nutrition and breastfeeding services and community referrals for WIC participants.

Work under the guidance of a Registered Dietitian.

Duties

Conduct individual nutritional assessments and determine program eligibility.

Provide counseling for high‑risk clients, process therapeutic formula, and handle WIC‑eligible requests.

Refer clients to appropriate medical and social services.

Participate in WIC vendor visits.

Assist in quality improvement audits of WIC paraprofessionals.

Attend workshops and conferences to promote nutrition and breastfeeding.

Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing targeted outreach.

Provide input for staff performance evaluations.

Assist in development and evaluation of the Local Agency Nutrition Services Plan and CQI plan.

Monitor and ensure program compliance with regulations.

Act as site lead for paraprofessional staff in the absence of a Registered Dietitian.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate Knowledge Of

Nutritional needs of pregnant, breastfeeding, postpartum women.

Nutritional needs of infants and children.

Principles and techniques for participant‑centered education.

Public health nutrition issues.

Food acceptance habits across ethnic and age groups.

Cultural competency.

Effective educational strategies.

Experience with electronic health records and office software.

Ability To

Implement nutrition, breastfeeding, and disease‑prevention programs under guidance.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Develop and present educational programs for paraprofessional staff.

Develop policies and procedures to meet federal, state, and local regulations.

Communicate clearly in writing and verbally.

Apply time‑management skills.

Lead, review, and guide paraprofessional staff work.

Collaborate to create effective teams.

Minimum Qualifications A combination of education, training, and experience that includes at least a bachelor’s degree in health education, community health, communications, kinesiology, nutrition, or a related field. Degrees in Public Health Nutrition, Nutrition, Dietetics, Nutrition Science, Food and Nutrition, Food Science, Nutrition and Health, Community Nutrition, or Home Economics with a nutrition emphasis are preferred.
