Job Summary Position under direct supervision of a Pathologist. Assists in human surgical specimen dissections, postmortem examinations, and quality assurance for Anatomic Pathology.

Responsibilities

Assists the Pathologist in the preparation and performance of human surgical specimen dissection and performs human postmortem examinations.

Obtains pertinent clinical information and history, laboratory data, x-rays, and scans, and assesses legal authorizations for autopsies.

Describes gross anatomic features and dissection of surgical specimens and the postmortem prosection including the external examination, in situ organ inspection, evisceration and dissection.

Prepares and submits appropriate tissue sections for routine histologic processing and intraoperative procedures such as frozen section, touch and squash preparation. Triages biological samples such as tissue, blood and toxicological material for special procedures including control assays, electron microscopy and immunofluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, genetic studies, bacterial and viral cultures, image analysis, immunohistochemistry and other special techniques as directed by the Pathologist.

Obtains and processes tissues for BioSpecimen Banking as required.

Photographs all pertinent specimens as directed by the Pathologist.

Assures proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies and cleanliness of the surgical pathology suite.

Assists the Pathologist Assistant Team Lead in overseeing the Surgical Pathology Techs and the Pathology Resident Training.

Assists in orientation of all new employees and identifies training needs to ensure that employees are performing their assigned job responsibilities.

Assists in the organization and coordination of Anatomic Pathology Conferences.

Qualifications

Candidate must be a graduate of an American Association of Pathologist Assistants (AAPA)/NAACLS educational program. ASCP certification eligibility required.

PA (ASCP) must be obtained within one year of hire.

Prior experience preferred but exam eligible new graduates are encouraged to apply.

Master’s Degree (Required).

Full time, Evening shift 4pm-12:30am, 40 hours per week.
