Unit Overview
The Medical Intermediate and Intensive Care Unit is a progressively opening unit with flexible patient acuity ranging from Acute to Intensive Care. This unit proudly provides quality care to Internal Medicine patients of a variety of medical diagnoses including renal, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, hepatology, infectious disease, endocrine, and gerontology. The team building this unit has been recognized by AACN as a Beacon Gold Unit for Excellence.
Unit Facts
28 bed hybrid unit focused on caring for a wide variety of adult medical patients across the full spectrum of their hospital admission
Primary admission diagnoses include respiratory failure, sepsis, multisystem organ failure, GI bleeds, DKA, and significant compromise of kidney and liver failure
Unit Functions
Practice evidence-based care for patients with complex medical and surgical diagnoses
Serve patients through the continuum of care
Provide 24‑hour accessibility to hospitalists and teaching physician services
Offer access to multiple Watson rooms, a unique space for team members to practice mindfulness
Promote professional development and advancement
Deliver exceptional care through interprofessional collaboration
Unit Secretary Responsibilities The Unit Secretary performs a variety of clerical tasks involved in preparing, maintaining and processing patient and unit activities, data and records.
Licensure / Certification Requirements for Hire: N/A
Requirements for Continued Employment: N/A
Experience Required: N/A
Preferred Experience
Previous experience setting up and maintaining an office system (organizational skills)
Previous experience with medical insurance, MIS, and medical terminology
Previous experience in a health care setting
Previous experience with Microsoft Office softwarePrevious experience with use of EMR
Education Required: High School Diploma or GED
Preferred Education Completion of a Medical Terminology course
Independent Actions Required
Able to perform daily activities with minimal supervision.
Self‑directed in the accomplishment of routine activities.
Issues that involve violation of VCUHS policy or procedure that involve conflicts of a sensitive nature, or that would be considered unusual in nature are to be brought to the attention of the Nurse Manager (or designee) promptly as would be warranted by the immediacy of the issue.
Job duties may include the handling, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.
Additional Position Requirements Unit Secretaries work all three shifts, weekends and holidays.
Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with specific Nurse Manager.
Schedules including requirements of shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet staffing requirements or the best interest of the work unit.
Physical Requirements
Lifting up to 50 lbs.
Prolonged standing, Prolonged sitting, Frequent bending, Walking (distance), Repetitive motion
Strong recall, Reasoning, Problem solving, Hearing, Speak clearly, Write legibly, Reading, Logical thinking
Able to handle multiple priorities, Frequent and intense customer interactions, Noisy environment, Able to adapt to frequent change
