About the Agency The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the state’s largest agencies, employing more than 14,000 people. It safeguards and preserves lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation, and it oversees the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. The department’s structure includes state prisons, healthcare, and facility operations staff, as well as probation/parole officers who supervise sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations, and the Post‑Release Supervision & Parole Commission.

Job Summary The Social Worker is located at the NC Correctional Institution for Women in Raleigh, which houses approximately 1,776 minimum, medium, or close‑custody female offenders. The role reports to the Social Worker Supervisor III and delivers specialized social work case management to offenders with behavioral, mental, emotional, and physical disorders. The primary focus is on working with mothers, addressing their children’s issues, and providing in‑depth assessment of family dynamics.

Responsibilities

Provide individual and group counseling, crisis and preventive intervention, community resource referrals, and re‑entry planning services.

Deliver social work services in complex cases requiring a flexible application of a wide range of techniques and interventions.

Focus on mother‑child relationships, as 85 % of incarcerated women are mothers, and perform comprehensive assessments of family dynamics.

Collaborate with the Department of Social Services and other personnel—such as school counselors, group home and foster care workers, and court staff—across North Carolina and other states where offenders’ children reside.

Management Preferences

Documented knowledge of social work techniques and practices.

Documented knowledge of community services available to individuals from the community and other public and private programs.

Minimum Education and Experience Master’s degree in social work from an accredited institution; or a Bachelor’s degree in social work from an accredited institution with one year of directly related experience; or a Master’s degree in a human services field with one year of experience; or a Bachelor’s degree in a human services field with two years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary Range $43,738.00 – $76,542.00 (Effective July 1, 2025)

Work Schedule This is a full‑time, 40‑hour per week position. The selected candidate will work Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Hours may vary to meet facility needs.
