Job Summary Provide advanced-level technical support in one or more of the following areas: Maintenance, construction, Intermodal, Planning, Utilities, Surveying, Environmental, or Traffic.
Job Specific Duties Under limited supervision, at a full working level, installs, maintains, and/or repairs traffic control devices and related equipment. Operate and perform preventative maintenance on several types of equipment used in traffic signal installation or maintenance which may include derrick trucks, aerial basket trucks, concrete saws, and trenchers. Upload and download signal controllers without supervision. Oversee and inspect work done by signal contractors, such as loop contracts, cabinet maintenance, signal installations, etc., and assure payment to contractors in a timely manner. Responsible for training lower level technicians to ensure compliance with Department policy and guidelines. May act as liaison with utility companies, contractors, and local governments. Serves as an on-call technician, in a regular rotating schedule, for reports of signal malfunction after normal business hours.
Special Note Concerning Maximum Weight Limitations The selected candidate(s) will be required to be lifted up into the air in the basket of an aerial bucket truck. The elevated height will vary depending on the equipment, if the equipment is on the ground, sitting on a bridge/overpass, or sitting in a ditch. This Rated Load Capacity for the aerial device (basket) is 310 pounds. This Rated Load Capacity (maximum weight) is determined by the vehicle manufacturer and includes the weight of the individual plus any tools or equipment.
Minimum Qualifications State Entry Qualifications
High school diploma or GED AND One year of experience at position equivalent.
Agency Specific Qualifications
Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License
Two or more years of experience with standard traffic control procedures/guidelines relating to traffic control, signal installation, and/or repair as set forth in the MUTCD
Possesses basic knowledge of standard electrical codes as set forth in the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and/or National Electrical Code (NEC)
Experience operating/maintaining installation vehicles/equipment
Possesses the physical strength and agility necessary to lift heavy equipment/materials such as spools of cable, conduits, etc. and perform work at heights up to 55ft.
Experience performing basic mathematical calculations related to traffic control device operation
Experience locating and recognizing pertinent information on highway/roadway plans, maps, and electrical diagrams/schematics
Demonstrated experience reading and comprehending technical manuals and instructions related to the job
Demonstrated experience to complete job related forms and reports
Demonstrated experience reasoning and making sound decisions based on narrowly defined criteria or guidelines to work and to communicate with supervisor, co-workers, and/or local government staff in a cooperative and professional manner
Demonstrated experience to work effectively with others to resolve differences
Demonstrated experience to manage own time effectively
Possesses working knowledge of signal timing procedures
Ability to develop possible solutions to moderately complex problems
Demonstrated experience to recall instructional and procedural information with minimal use of reference material; to adapt quickly to change
Ability to provide effective on-the-job instruction/guidance to less experienced co-workers and to gather and organize information effectively
Ability to effectively manage resources based on the needs/objectives of the job assignment
