Position Summary
The Certified Surgical Tech - First Assist provides direct assistance to surgeons during obstetrical surgical procedures, ensuring optimal exposure, patient safety, and adherence to surgical standards of practice.
Schedule & Shift Information PRN position with availability requirements that may include days, nights, weekends, and holiday rotation. Scheduling is managed through a self-scheduling process.
Annual Deliveries Approximately 700-800 deliveries per year
Patient Populations OB, Postpartum, Nursery, Level II Special Care Nursery
Unit Layout
6 Labor rooms (2 used for C-section pre-op)
7 Postpartum rooms
2 OB Outpatient (OBE) rooms
Average Length of Stay 2-3 days
Support Staff Nurse Tech / Unit Secretary; Surgical Scrub Tech
Orientation & Training Orientation length and format are based on experience and current skill level, with preceptor support as appropriate
Essential Functions Provide direct assistance to surgeons during obstetrical surgical procedures Position patients to ensure optimal exposure while maintaining comfort and safety Provide visualization of the operative field through tissue manipulation, retraction, suctioning, sponging, and irrigation Utilize appropriate techniques to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis Assist with closure of body planes, application of wound dressings, and securing drainage systems Maintain strict sterile technique and compliance with surgical protocols and safety standards
Required Skills & Abilities Strong critical thinking and clinical judgment Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Ability to function effectively in high-stress, fast-paced environments Strong attention to detail and patient safety
Qualifications Education: Associate's Degree preferred Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or First Assist program (required)
Licensure / Certifications
Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (required)
Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) (required)
Basic Life Support (BLS) (required)
Experience Minimum of one (1) year of surgical scrub tech experience preferred Experience in OB or Women's Services strongly preferred
