General Summary The Infusion/Extensivist RN works as part of a team with physicians and other registered nurses providing care for patients with multiple complex medical conditions. Establishing IV access and/or port access using aseptic/sterile technique. Reconstituting and administering medications, fluids, and biologics. Monitoring of patient’s health conditions by evaluating the patient's conditions for signs/symptoms of allergic reaction, notifying the physician and fellow nurse team, administering treatment, providing constant support during recovery, and contacting EMS if necessary. Use of multiple types of medical equipment, completing wound care, order and schedule PICC placement, order and confirmation of home health services, educating patients and their families on health lifestyle changes with the goal of avoiding hospitalization if possible. Demonstrating strong decision‑making/problem solving skills for best possible patient outcome .
Main Responsibilities
Physical assessment of patient’s medical condition and/or status
Medication reconciliation with patient and/or family member
Proficiency in obtaining IV access and obtaining lab specimens
Verifying provider orders prior to reconstituting of medication and administration
Administer medication or fluids as directed by provider to patients utilizing intravenous methods (IV, Midline, PICC, Subclavian port)
Review charts for potential drug interactions or other health concerns
Monitor patients as they receive treatment to ensure vital signs are stable and document in medical chart
Ensure that there are no complications or reactions to treatments being administered
If there are reactions or complications, take immediate action to alleviate the reaction and contact the provider and/or nurse team for assistance
Educate patients and/or their family about their conditions and how to maintain hygiene of their infusion site
Maintain/order additional equipment as needed in the infusion suite to ensure that the area has the necessary supplies
Collaborate with physicians and other medical professionals regarding the care of patients and the intravenous infusions
Perform data analysis and research as directed by the provider
Contact insurance companies to obtain prior authorizations and shipment of medication
Education/Experience/Knowledge
High School diploma or equivalent required
1-3 years experience performing infusion
Certified Registered Nurse Infusion (CRNI) or Infusion Nurses Certification Corporation (INCC) preferred
