Job Summary
The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine (AUCVM) veterinary student in this position will be responsible for working as the OR circulator during emergency cases that must go to the operating room after hours in the Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital. The student will assist faculty and house officers in the operating room by setting up patient and OR equipment and retrieving items from sterile supply, opening items aseptically and recording items on a pick sheet. The student will help with patient positioning and aseptic prep, and will be responsible for cleaning the OR, equipment, and instruments after the patient leaves the operating room.
The position involves taking call weeknights from 6pm-7am the following morning, all day/night on weekends and holidays by using a rotating sign up schedule posted by the After Hours Team Lead each month. The student will report directly to the Small Animal Surgical Services supervisor.
Essential Functions
Sign up for on-call shifts for weeknights, weekends, and holidays for small animal after hours emergency surgery cases
Set up operating room after hours using aseptic technique
Assist with patient positioning and aseptic prep
Gown and glove in surgeons, house officers, and veterinary students for surgery
Perform initial OR checklist with surgeon to confirm patient and procedure identification
Open instrument packs, drape kits, single instruments, and expendable supplies using aseptic technique
Retrieve items from sterile supply as needed during surgery
Maintain patient charge sheets
Clean and decontaminate the operating room, equipment, and instruments after surgery
Prepare operating room and emergency supplies for the next emergency case
