Applications are being accepted for Correctional Officer, Monday through Friday at the Public Safety Building from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Correctional Officers work a 6 days on 3 days off work week. Applicable shifts: 1st shift is 7 am to 3 pm; 2nd shift is 3 pm to 11 pm; and, 3rd shift is 11 pm to 7 am. There is no date set at this time for written and agility tests.

Wage / Salary: $61,467 annually

Duties / Responsibilities:

A Correctional Officer operates devices for locking and unlocking group and individual cells in housing units, locks and unlocks security doors and other secured areas, and is accountable for all keys issued for these purposes.

Patrols the jail interior, inspecting doors, locking devices, locks, security windows, grills, outer walls, etc.; and is alert for any unusual movements, noises, or incidents which might jeopardize the security of the facility.

Is responsible for making regular and unscheduled counts of residents and report all counts to his/her supervisor.

Passes on to his/her relieving officer any pertinent information of unusual or disturbing nature. He/she prevents fights and arguments between residents and prevents minor disturbances. In case of emergency, he/she follows prescribed or directed procedures. He/she exercises constant vigilance to observe any unusual activities indicative of attempted escape, disturbances, etc. and promptly reports them to his/her supervisor. He/she controls resident movement to and from cells and does not permit residents to loiter.

Directly supervises residents in quarters, in dayroom or recreational areas, and as escort to court or for medical treatment, or other authorized transfer.

Conducts periodic inspections of all areas and especially of resident living quarters to detect and eliminate contraband. He/she directs and coordinates residents in sanitation details and on scheduled work programs within the Center. He/she supervises resident trustees in their work. He/she enforces economy in use of materials and supplies. He/she is alert to maintenance requirements and submits reports of problems to his/her supervisor.

Arranges for issue of clean clothing, bedding, personal hygiene items and other supplies according to schedule. Heshe directly supervises feeding of residents in quarters and is accountable for eating and serving utensils.

Counsels with residents on matters pertaining to the facility adjustment and enforces compliance with regulation.

Supervises visits of residents from relatives, attorneys, religious representatives, or other authorized persons, and advises his supervisor of any unusual information or attitudes. He/she distributes mail to individual residents.

Assists with admission and release of residents; in that function he/she complies with procedural instructions for whatever phase he/se may handle.

Assists residents as necessary to complete authorized telephone calls. He/she will maintain proper housing location files and other records of his past, and will process callout lists on schedule.

Prepares disciplinary reports as required by circumstances if the severity of the infraction of rules precludes solution on an informal basis. He/she will prepare any other incident reports which should be brought to the attention of superiors.

Signs in visitors to residents and receipt for money or clothing, as authorized, left for residents by visitors.

Gives on the job personal instruction to new correctional officers through practical demonstration of the duties to be performed. He/she conducts informal orientation and counseling to residents as required to ensure compliance with Center regulations and gives trustee on the job training for completion of work assignments and care of equipment.

He/she will be alert for resident illness and will review request for medial attention to ensure all pertinent information is included, and will refer these to the proper official for evaluation and action. When necessary, he/she will contact medical personnel for instruction and will record the indicated medication or treatment in writing for the medical record.

Dispenses medications as set up in conformity to individual treatment orders from medical orders at sick-call or over the telephone as given by qualified medical personnel. He/she will ensure that the medication is properly taken by the resident and is not concealed.

Serve as a telephone operator for the Departments non-emergency telephone.

Testify in court when requested.

Prepare reports of shift activities.

Perform other duties as assigned by a higher authority.

Qualifications: An applicant for appointment as a Correctional Officer shall meet the standards prescribed by the Vermilion County Merit Commission.
