Job Description

Accounting Manager – Construction Portfolio

Irvine, CA | Onsite with Flex WFH days

We've partnered with two long-standing commercial and specialty contractors in Orange County, operating under a large construction portfolio of drywall and interiors sub-contractors. This Accounting Manager role owns day-to-day accounting for a $50–$100M project revenue portfolio in Irvine. If you are looking for the stability of an enterprise firm, but the culture of a family-owned organization...this is your opportunity!

You'll be the on-site financial point person for the Irvine office, leading a small team, tightening processes, and giving leadership clean, timely numbers across both entities.

The Role

This is a hands-on, in-the-weeds Accounting Manager role with a construction focus. You'll sit in the Irvine office, Monday–Friday, with up to 50 WFH days per year as a key flexibility benefit.

You will:

  • Lead day-to-day accounting operations across (OC/LA branch): AP, AR, payroll coordination, cash posting, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Own month-end close: journal entries, reconciliations, supporting schedules, and internal reporting for a ~$50–$100M book of business.
  • Manage contract billing and collections, including WIP / percentage-of-completion accounting, change orders, and job close-out.
  • Monitor job cost, margins, and overruns across union and non-union work.
  • Handle compliance-heavy construction items: Davis-Bacon/prevailing wage, OCIP/CCIP programs, bonding requirements, garnishments, and related documentation.
  • Oversee SUTA/FUTA and other payroll-related filings, including client-specific billing.
  • Serve as a key contact for vendors, resolving invoice and payment issues quickly and professionally.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and ad hoc financial analysis for Irvine operations.
  • Be a local culture carrier in the office—helping coordinate workflow, communication, and expectations across the accounting/admin team.

Team & Reporting Structure

You will manage a small, experienced support team of ~5 people, including:

  • Office manager with broad office knowledge.
  • 2 Multi-hat team member supporting various functions.
  • Payroll-focused team member.
  • Office Administrator

Reporting lines:

  • Primary: Unit President, (OC/LA branch), Controller, CFO, Corporate CFO - Umbrella Company(Kansas City)

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; equivalent experience considered.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with construction or specialty contracting exposure strongly preferred.
  • Solid grasp of GAAP, internal controls, and job cost concepts.
  • Experience working across multiple entities or business units.
  • Strong Excel skills and ERP experience; prior exposure to Penta or similar construction systems is helpful.
  • Experience leading or mentoring staff; comfortable setting expectations and coaching.
  • Clear, direct communication style with field leaders, executives, and vendors.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus, not a requirement.

Key Experience to be successful in this role:

Strong fit candidates will bring hands-on construction accounting experience covering:

  • WIP / percentage-of-completion accounting
  • Job cost tracking, margins, and overruns
  • Union and non-union environments
  • Davis-Bacon / prevailing wage
  • Contract billing and overseeing collections
  • Journal entries and general ledger work
  • Vendor communication and issue resolution
  • SUTA/FUTA reporting
