Position Overview
Title: Aquatic Camp Director – Summer 2026
Department: Parks and Recreation
Pay Rate: $28.00/hour
Position Type: Parks, Recreation & Community Services – Seasonal
Location: Chandler‑Newberger Center
Hours: Varies, Monday‑Friday 8:30 am‑5 pm with occasional weekends and holidays. Available mid‑May through Labor Day. Must work all nine (9) weeks of camp from June 9 to August 8 and assist at lakefront until Labor Day.
Key Responsibilities
Supervise and ensure the safety of all camp staff and campers.
Enforce all rules and regulations pertaining to Evanston Lakefront and Parks and Recreation camps.
Use proper surveillance techniques to guard the swimming area.
Respond to patrons in need of emergency assistance.
Maintain a safe environment and supervise all campers.
Know and adhere to all boating regulations and safety measures.
Conduct camp and develop all designated lesson plans.
Deliver staff training sessions.
Communicate effectively to patrons and camp parents.
Attend staff meetings scheduled by the program coordinator.
Maintain a clean and safe beach and office environment.
Care for and maintain equipment and storage areas.
Complete written reports such as accident, incident and other reports on time.
Notify supervisors of issues needing special attention.
Perform other reasonable duties as assigned by program coordinator or manager.
Operate boats for tubing, water skiing, rescues, etc.
Manage enrollment of campers and oversee safety of campers and camp counselors.
Assist with pre‑ and post‑season maintenance tasks.
Qualifications & Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent (minimum 1 year of high school).
Current certifications in Lifeguard Training, CPR, AED and First‑Aid.
Experience: At least one year as a lifeguard and camp counselor with the City of Evanston is preferred.
Completed all preseason training.
Physical abilities: can exert up to 50 lb of force occasionally/frequently, lift/kneel/bend/stand for long periods, work outdoors across varying weather conditions.
Knowledge of basic sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and boat driving.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to read, write, and speak as required.
Preferred age 18 +; must be available mid‑May through Labor Day.
Pre‑employment drug/alcohol test, criminal and DCFS background check.
