Work Hours:
Varies, Mondays‑Friday 8:30am‑5pm with occasional weekends and holidays up to 40 hrs/week.
Job Summary Responsible for the supervision and safety of all camp staff and campers in the City of Evanston Aquatics Camp.
Responsibilities
Ability to work all nine (9) weeks of camp from June 8‑August 9 and assist at lakefront until Labor Day or return to school in the fall.
Adheres to staff policies including but not limited to time off request, attendance, and uniform policies.
Know and enforce all rules and regulations pertaining to the Evanston Lakefront and Parks and Recreation camps.
Use proper surveillance techniques to guard the swimming area.
Identify patrons in need of emergency assistance and respond appropriately.
Maintain safe environment and supervise all campers.
Know and adhere to all boating regulations and safety measures.
Conduct camp and develop all designated lesson plans.
Conduct staff training sessions.
Responsible for effective and appropriate communication to patrons and camp parents.
Attend staff meetings as scheduled by program coordinator and camp director.
Maintain a clean and safe beach and office environment.
Responsible for care and maintenance of equipment and storage areas.
Complete written reports such as accident, incident and the like on a timely basis.
Communicate to supervisor(s) if there are problems or issues needing special attention.
Performs other reasonable duties as assigned by program coordinator or program manager.
Knowledge in basic sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and boat driving.
Operate boats for tubing, vessel assistance, patrols, etc.
Assists with enrollment of campers.
Oversees safety of campers and camp counsellors.
Assumes responsibilities of Aquatic Camp Manager in his/her absence.
Assists with pre‑ and post‑season maintenance‑related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Prerequisites
Completed at least 1 year of high school.
Current Certifications in Lifeguard Training, CPR, AED and First‑Aid.
Prerequisite: Available mid‑May through Labor Day.
Preferred: 18+ years of age.
Preferred: At least one year as a lifeguard with the City of Evanston.
Pre‑employment Drug/Alcohol Test.
Criminal and DCFS Background Check.
Specifications
Minimum Reasoning ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
Minimum Language ability: Read staff manuals, memoranda, and attendance sheets; write daily log sheets, accident reports, incident reports; speak verbally as required.
Education: Completed at least 1 year of high school; Complete all preseason training.
Degree of Physical Demands: Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly.
Physical Demands: Reaching, Handling, Talking, Hearing, Feeling, Tasting/Smelling, Climbing, Balancing, Stooping, Kneeling, Crouching, Crawling, Seeing.
Vision: Acuity‑far, acuity‑near, depth perception, field of vision, accommodation, color vision.
Working Conditions: Ability to lift, kneel, bend, stand for long periods, identify colors, work outdoors at night.
Environmental Conditions: Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions (rain, high temperatures, humidity) at beaches, recreation centers, multipurpose rooms, swimming pools, athletic fields, parks, playgrounds, office space.
Environmental Hazards: 5% inside, 95% outside work, no effective protection.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: pen, pencil, ruler, blueprints, charts, contracts, diagrams, directives, documents, forms, manuals, publications, reference books, schedules, specifications.
