THE POSITION This assignment is responsible for performing maintenance activities such as sewer and storm system maintenance, repairs, cleaning, and performing work on the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Program which will become more critical as Public Works moves away from repairs to more cleaning and CCTV inspection of sewer and storm infrastructures.

Under general supervision, the position will perform a variety of journey level skilled or semi-skilled trade work involved in the maintenance and repair of the city's sewer and storm drain systems. Performs other related work as required.

CalPERS Retirement:

JOB SUMMARY & DUTIES Under general supervision, performs a variety of journey level skilled or semi-skilled trade work involved in the construction, installation, operations, maintenance and repair of public streets, buildings, structures, facilities, systems, equipment and grounds. Performs other related work as required. This is the journey level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Positions in this class perform highly responsible maintenance work and may be responsible for the independent performance of particularly difficult or specialized maintenance work and/or for providing lead direction to subordinate employees. Work in the class is distinguished from that of lower classes by the greater independence with which an incumbent is expected to operate and by the more technical aspects or overall complexity of the work. Incumbents are able to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instructions or assistance as unusual or unique situations arise and are fully aware of operating policies and procedures. Assignment specialties may include carpentry, plumbing, concrete work, or street, waste and storm water systems, electrical, or tree and landscape maintenance work. Actual responsibilities will vary according to assignment. Work may be performed under supervision, independently or with the assistance of helpers.

Performs journey-level skilled or semi-skilled construction, maintenance and repair work; may perform general construction and street maintenance repair work.

Operates and maintains construction and maintenance equipment for a variety of construction and maintenance operations involving public facilities, streets, sidewalks, gutters, and waste and storm water systems; operates and maintains a variety of other equipment and tools including compressors or pneumatic tools.

Installs signs, traffic cones and barricades.

Performs rough and finished carpentry.

Performs skilled electrical repair and maintenance work related to public buildings, traffic signals, waste and storm water systems, and other public facilities or operations.

Paints building surfaces, furniture, fixtures, signs, traffic control lines, etc.

Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures.

Operates and maintains a variety of waste and storm water systems pumps; cleans, excavates and/or repairs waste and storm water systems pipes.

Removes, forms, pours and finishes concrete.

Maintains sprinkler and irrigation systems and equipment.

Prunes and maintains trees and landscaped areas.

Maintains supplies, work records and logs.

Reads and interprets blueprints, specifications, maps and drawings.

Drives and operates heavy trucks and specialized vehicular equipment.

May provide lead direction and training for subordinate employees.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE Any combination equivalent to education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education

Graduation from high school.

Experience

Two years of skilled public works, facilities or equipment maintenance or construction trades experience.

KNOWLEDGE Knowledge of modern practices, procedures, equipment and tools used in journey level skilled trade work and in related construction and maintenance; safe work practices and procedures.

Experience in sewer or storm drain maintenance highly desirable.

California Water Environment Association (CWEA) - Collection System Maintenance Certification (Grade 1 or higher) highly desirable.

ABILITY Ability to perform a variety of journey level skilled construction, maintenance and repair work including carpentry, plumbing, electrical and concrete work, tree and landscape maintenance, traffic painting, sign maintenance, and waste and storm water systems; operate heavy trucks, specialized vehicular equipment, and other related tools and equipment; perform technically sophisticated and highly complex maintenance related work; read and interpret blueprints, maps and drawings; use spray equipment and restricted chemicals; maintain accurate records; communicate effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public; provide lead direction and training to subordinate employees.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Willingness and ability to respond to after-hours emergency calls as required.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS Possession of a valid California Driver's License and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.

Employees hired after June 1, 1996 and assigned to the Public Works Department: Possession of a valid Class B State of California driver's license (or the ability to obtain within six months of appointment) and a satisfactory driving record as conditions of initial and continued employment.

Employees required to have a Class B driver's license or in positions requiring a Hazardous Materials Endorsement are subject to provisions of the Department of Transportation's drug and alcohol testing program.

SELECTION PROCESS The examination process may include an application and supplemental questionnaire evaluation, a written exam, a performance exam, and/or an oral interview. The examination process may test for, but is not limited to, the essential knowledge and abilities listed in the job specification and announcement and will be designed to provide a comprehensive review of each candidate's technical knowledge and overall suitability for the position. Qualified applicants will be notified of the exact date, time, and location of examinations approximately two weeks in advance. Candidates passing all components of the examination process will be placed on an Eligible List. A list of names is certified to the department(s) having vacancies based on the type of examination conducted pursuant to the provision of the City's Civil Service Rules. Final selection will be made from the Eligible List by the Department Head subject to approval by the City Manager. The Department Head may utilize additional selection procedures to make a final hiring decision. Placement on an Eligible List does not guarantee employment. Prior to appointment, a thorough reference check will be conducted which may include a credit check and background. The selection process may be evaluated and revised based on the number of qualified applicants. Federal law requires that prior to employment, you must furnish proof of your identity and eligibility for employment in the United States, as required by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

E-VERIFY The City of Alameda utilizes the Federal government's E-Verify program and new employees must provide documentation to establish both identity and work authorization, which includes showing a valid United States Social Security card at the time of hire (photocopies not accepted).

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE CREDIT A job applicant qualifies as a veteran if honorably discharged from active military, reservist, or National Guard duty of at least 18 consecutive months within the past five (5) years of the date of application. In case of discharge attributable to service-connected injuries or illnesses, the 18 months active-duty requirement need not be fulfilled.
