Vat Room Operator 1- 2nd Shift
Michael Foods, Inc. located in Norwalk, Iowa is a southern suburb in the Des Moines metropolitan area. Our facility produces high‑quality precooked egg patties and various French Toast products.
Location Description Norwalk, IA – a dynamic area within the greater Des Moines region, known for community and quality of life.
Responsibilities Position duties include running computerized process systems, hooking up silos, performing CIP’s of silos and equipment, blending and sanitation tasks in a manner that results in the optimum production of quality products while maintaining a safe, sterile and efficient operation. The role also requires compliance with safety work rules, enforcing Safety as a Core Value, and upholding all food safety and quality policies.
Ability and willingness to assist in other areas of the business as needed.
Operate the HTST processing system and CIP system, recording all time, temperature, pressure, and flow rates as required by the company. Detect and report or act upon any system abnormality.
Understand how a processing system operates and how sanitation, bacterial control, and sterilization relate to it.
Post any equipment issues and perform minor maintenance repairs.
Coordinate with the packaging lead person regarding system status to allow timely hook‑up and startup of the production line.
Clean silos, mix room, totes, pumps, UHT press, and all CIP lines.
Monitor and troubleshoot CIP systems, ensuring proper operation and chemical concentrations meet company and USDA standards.
Maintain chemical usage, ensuring all drums contain chemicals and achieving correct PPM for each chemical cycle.
Prepare written reports and maintain logs, records, and other documentation required by the company and USDA.
Have complete knowledge of mix room and equipment. Blend mixed products using the outlined mix procedures.
Foster open communications and a positive attitude toward work and teammates.
Maintain regular and consistent attendance.
Assume personal responsibility for a safe and healthy workplace for all. Adhere to safety policies and incorporate safety into all tasks.
Follow all GMP’s, maintain sanitary conditions, and ensure product quality; report any conditions that may adversely affect food safety and quality.
Ensure regulatory compliance at all times.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Must be able to work in high and confined spaces while following safety procedures.
Must be able to work overtime and/or weekends when required.
Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Three to six months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to communicate effectively before groups, customers/venders, or employees.
Ability to perform basic arithmetic (add, subtract, multiply, divide) in all units of measure.
Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percent and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to apply common sense to carry out written, oral, or diagram instructions.
Ability to solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to prioritize and follow directions with little or no supervision.
Multi–functional tasking in a fast‑paced environment.
Bi‑lingual (Spanish‑English) is a plus.
